That latter demographic is changing, though. (Also, it's a little more difficult to pin down since it depends on how you define the term "gamer." If you include people that play casual games on mobile devices and through social media sites then that's going to seriously alter the data.)
Edit: Okay, yeah, to the point above- the AAA blockbuster games are still often geared toward that demographic. Still, even EA and Activision have basically admitted that a lot of the people in that player base don't play other franchises or game genres.
In my experience, the "dudebro" types usually just play shooters and/or the annual sports titles.
Hopefully, the massive success of DA:I is going to help convince EA that sprawling rpgs can compete with the big time FPS games. It seems they gave Bioware a good amount of resources and breathing room on this one- I'm hoping its success leads them to do that again in the future.
