Okay.

So, first off, before Marlboro came out in the 50's, cigarettes were advertised towards women. That was the target audience for cigarettes. Sometimes men were targeted as well but it was mostly towards woman because smoking was considered elegant and sexy - basically any quality that a female wants. They were advertised as though they were actually healthy for you. If you didn't smoke, there was something wrong with you.

Then, scientists publicly revealed that cigarettes were actually really harmful for you. So this damaged pretty much all sales of cigarettes. The way those cigarette companies tried to correct this was by putting a man in a white suit (a scientist) on the packaging saying they were healthy for you. Most of these companies actually paid to get the scientific results they wanted so that they weren't technically lying.

The exception to this new wave of advertising was Marlboro. Marlboro decided that they didn't want to put a scientist on the packaging and make up results they wanted. They decided to change how cigarettes were represented. They came up with the Marlboro man who, in image, was a white cowboy.

- The cowboy represents the American dream for all intents and purposes. The cowboy represents freedom and handwork and staking your claim on the land. The cowboy in American culture is the pioneer of everything America is.

So, when Marlboro advertised this, this new idea got messaged across. If you smoke Marlboro cigarettes, you will be like this cowboy. You will be a hard worker. You have your freedom. You will be a pioneer. You will be a cowboy.

And it worked. If Marlboro hadn't had done that, I would assume that smoking would no longer be as common as it still is now.

Ya know..Thats like drinking...I smoke out of necessity..not for the 'glamourus Taste' and what not

I actually picked smoking , in...a...whats called ? one of those refuge for womens beaten? So was around 2000 .

You were in a woman's shelter? I am so sorry to hear that Alexia! That's terrible! Whoever they were I hope they got what was coming to them!

One of the reasons I quit was cause a doctor I had told me I was self-medicating my anxiety with cigarettes. I may have started for glamour but when I quit it was a two pack a day crutch. :(

It's brilliant... and insidious.

American Spirits are good, but it's kind of sad that you pay so much more just to get actual tobacco.

Most of the stuff out there has god knows what in it. I think one of the brands even puts formaldehyde in it. lol

newport and maverick have it(i couldnt afford spirits this week had to go cheap brand)

It was brilliant. They literally got into the minds of what all Americans believed wholeheartedly in, in this cowboy way of life. Marlboro man, no matter what anyone says, is considered one of the most influential advertisements in the 20th century.

It's less an less common here. I don't know about the UK. Here it's really expensive and can cost around $8 a pack! It's also so socially unacceptable and there are very few places you can legally smoke! When I started smoking Light, I could smoke in my college classes with an ashtray by my desk. I smoked on the commuter train home, in restaurants, planes you name it. No way you'd get away with that now!

Your reason for smoking is why I drink coffee.

There are so many places it's banned. We only have a few designated smoking spots on campus, just like an airport.

And there are all those health warnings on the cigarette packs too.

It saved cigarettes back then in the 50's but now, we've gone back to cigarettes are just not worth your health. Also, you are not allowed to advertise cigarettes anymore anyway so sales go down.

I did balloon up in weight when I quit. I won't lie. I put the pounds on. However I don't regret it. Yeah there are all sorts of ways to self-medicate. Food, booze, drugs, smokes. I guess there will always be some sort of vice. :(
