I must confess that I hold big resentment for women like your friend, because I feel they contribute to erasure of women like me. Like in your confession - I assume you based your convictions about how gay women feel about this stuff on your own feelings. And apparently example of that woman convinced you that for gay women, it's about "feelings", not sex, that lesbians can be into men sexually.

 

You're probably not aware of that, but that's exactly the damaging idea about gay women - that yeah, we can be "touchy-feely" with other women, that it's about cuddling and holding hands together, but for "real sex", we need d**k, at least from time to time. It's basically the opposite of damaging myths about gay men - for them, it is believed it's all about sex, not love, that two men can't really love each other.

 

Women like your friend are also used to justify homophobic portrayals of lesbians in the media. I wrote to BBC twice with complaint about such depictions in their 2 shows last year (in one, lesbian character had passionate sex with a man month after telling another man who was hitting on her that she's lesbian so it's not going to happen, in another show lesbian character had passionate sex with a man after being basically sexually harassed by said man, who saw her lesbianism as a challenge - I kid you not).

Each time they wrote me back pretty much the same answer that they're just portraying reality of "some lesbians". And then introduced that kind of storyline 2 more times that year.

 

My resentment is also based on the fact that, at least when it comes to those I had discussion with, they never admit of that side of homophobia, they even encourage such storylines I mentioned above, pretending that it's never seen (when just last year there were at least 7 instances of "lesbian having sex with a man and loving it" trope in TV).

It's understandable why they are doing that - it validates their identity. But at the same time, it contributes to erasure of women who are exclusively sexually attracted to women since it harmonizes perfectly with what the homophobic people like to think about us.

 

 

So it's basically a matter of contradictory interests, but I think it's women like me that are at disadvanage here, because what I described above does not lead to making people think there are different "types" of lesbians out there. It's convincing people that women like me don't exist, that it's true that lesbians as a whole don't mind d**k. Meanwhile, those women have so many other labels they could use to describe their sexuality instead, without making life harder for other women.

 

Last but not least, I also wanted to add that the only longitudinal research on sexual minority women I am aware of, of Lisa M. Diamond, showed that distinction between lesbian-identified women - some based their identity mainly on romantic, some on sexual feelings.

But after 10 years of the study majority of initially lesbian identified women who felt some sexual attraction to men, but believed they could only fall in love with women, found some man "who was different" and dropped lesbian label.

The only "extremely solid" group were women who have always been exclusively sexually attracted to women, regardless of their romantic history (some actually figured out they were lesbians because they still didn't feel sexual attraction even to men they loved - basically the opposite of your friend).

 

That's why Lisa Diamond thinks sexual orientation is based on sexual feelings (speaking precisely "proceptivity", but it needs a lot longer explanation) and that we all have potential to fall in love with anyone, as Helen Fisher's brain research showed that the structures that run romantic and sexual feelings are separated and influenced by different hormones, and Diamond's research suggests romantic preferences unlike sexual ones aren't hardwired.

 

So I personally would be a lot more OK with portrayal of lesbian with romantic, but not sexual feelings for a man than the other way around, but only after substantial portrayal of lesbian characters that are just into women.

 

Whoah, whoah, whoah. I said I had an assumption and she made me see things as being more complex but she did not make me think gay women need d*ck or something. All she clued me into were there were different perspectives and experiences among gay women and that gay women were not some monolithic hive mentality. Wow way to assume an awful lot. She was never into men in the time I knew her nor did I have any sort of idea in my head that she secretly wanted me or men or was anything other than what she was to me which was just a good friend. Way to make me feel like that was dishonest or cheap. Can I have my five minutes back?
