I guess it's a difference to know you're honoring something, and that everyone around you has a tattoo on their face. A real difference from real life, where not only facial tattoos are relatively rare, but they mostly have no real meaning.
I did not put much thought into it at first, I just had a bad hunch. From RL and DAO (casteless dwarves) I only knew negative meanings. And Solas confirmed it, so I stuck with my antipathy. (Yes, I have learned there are also positive meanings of facial markings in RL, but I did not know that until a few weeks ago.)
