It's not canon. There is no Varric/Cass romance. And it's not even much of a character study of the two. I posted Varric's quote earlier: "Just because two people dislike each other, doesn't mean they're about kiss." Nor is it much of a study on Cass' character, seeing how much effort and romance she'd like to see from a man. Why is she suddenly dropping her standards with Varric?
 
I'll tell you why: Because people would rather be self-indulgent rather than pay attention to any of that. And in the process, step on my toes. Or being like you, turning me into the bad guy for just playing things that were in the actual ****** game.
 
I know no one is going to listen though. I know I'm not composing any of this in a friendly manner.

I've never seen someone so passionate about this. It's genuinely something I've never thought of. I'm a big fan of fan fiction. Like I said, it's mostly games related and it's mostly my PC and their LI - FemShep/Liara, Warden/Leliana, Hawke/Isabela, etc. So that doesn't pose the problems it does for you. For some people, the Warden is a dude who's had over heels for Morrigan, and that's cool. There's no canon being interfered with when a PC is involved.

I first got into fanfic with Buffy. I read a lot of Buffy/Faith stuff purely because it was hot, not because I believed it SHOULD or would be canon. There was subtext there - unintentional by Joss Whedon's admission, and deliberately played up by Eliza Dushku by *her* own admission. The stories were fun because they took something that while not canon, was not 100% out of the realm of possibility either. It was never "this is how the story should be!" for me, it was "hey, this is fun, and also sexy". It was no different to casual enjoyment of non canon Buffy novels IMO.

Now games are different, as they have that personal interactive element - especially RPGs. I've never seen someone express your displeasure at non canon shipping to now, but after reading your posts I kind of get it. The Cassandra/Varric isn't a huge thing for me, I'm new to it. My biggest BioWare non canon guilty pleasure is probably Miranda/Jack. Varric is 100% right that antagonism isn't always sexual tension - but sometimes it is. I'm not saying it's the actual canon case with Miranda and Jack any more than Varric and Cass - I know it isn't. But it makes for fun, non canon FICTION that can be written as sexual tension.

But, I see your point - let's say something were to develop in canon between Varric and Cass - your romance is undermined. I really don't see that happening, though - they've been good with LIs as NPCs in Inquisition. So does non-preachy enjoyment of fiction that doesn't advocate actually changing canon still upset you...?
