It's sad, really. You can easily see this "trend" here, in tumblr and other sites.
Hell, Bianca just got one hate thread. Fiona as well. And I haven't seen any hate thread for one of the dudes in DA....

:/

The only dude to get this much hate is Krem. Wonder why that is.

If Cass's sexuality was switched she probably would get a lot of hate, because of unavailability, she wouldn't have gotten as much hate from some lesbians as Sera has though, since she's not as controversial. If Sera was male she could have ended up as the next Varric. Just joking, but it could happen, still would have gotten some hate because of elfy stance.

(only my thoughts and opinions, the armies don't need to be mobilized  )

No I think that's an astute observation. I've wondered if a certain amount of sexism isn't in play in Sera's criticism (the stuff that does not come from the lesbian angle but more to her general demeanor and actions)?

Sera already shares some traits with some of the males (Alistair, Oghren, Fenris). Guess who are the most loved.

Anders is the closest I can think of but he blows up a church and hits on dudes, so...

The minor character hate particularly confuses me, I mean I think Jowan is a prize twit but why dwell on it? Then again character hate confuses me to begin with.

That's a scary thought. Hungover Sera...

You never know, it could be the one time she is quiet and reflective.

It would be really interesting if you could release an alternate version of the game with a bunch of characters with similar personalities but with genders and sexualities switched around to compare and contrast the fan reactions, but sadly that's never going to be possible.

Which is why I'm hesitant to say it's a factor. But the trend is there, and its an issue in other contexts.

Isn't Alistair most loved by females, Oghren loved by males, and Fenris is meh

I don't see how dev favouritism would be enough of a tangible thing for most people to fuel their hate.

I'm inclined to think the intensity of hate is at least somewhat influenced by her being a woman, but it's difficult to be objective about. Solas and Blackwall do some pretty jerky things and get a lot of hate for it, but I don't see a constant train of hate threads like Sera's personality and Cassandra's face get.

I think that it's partially that, and partially that Sera is very casual about insulting people/things that a lot of people are attached to. Just being a general jerk is one thing, especially if it's a big backstory/plot element like with Solas or Blackwall, but focused jerkery that attacks specific in-groups that a player has identified with is liable to cause much harsher reactions, and Sera does that more than anyone except possibly Vivienne.

Fenris is literally on a pedestral in tumblr by both men and women. :P

Isn't much about gender since a lot of straight women like Sera too but dear god the double standard makes me cry.

Wait, literally? They got a little stone column and made him lie on it, for some reason?

It's Bioware's fanbase, double standards is the third thing they're about :P

A few test subjects, some hastily cobbled footage and a little lobotomy, and we can get our results!

Of course. It's to display his assets.

To be clear I think that gender is factor in the way people intensely discuss their hate of her, rather than the cause of it.

I don't think Sera would be liked by everyone if she is male - far from it - I just suspect that not liking her would be less of a big deal for a lot of people - or at least they wouldn't feel the need to comment on it out of context.

If you scale hate by screen time Krem makes Sera look like an amateur.

I quite like Alistair, am indifferent to Oghren and actively dislike Fenris. I must not be a man. Or normal . Or something.

I've never been one to start threads and post blogs about characters I don't like, though. I just leave them out of my party...

To me the ultimate companions was rather telling, Alistair (straight Knight) Varric (straight cool dude) and Morrigan (she's all mine, keep your hands off). Maybe it's a little crass but I don't even see a bi person in the mix, let alone gay. You would think a bi person would make the list due to availability but maybe sharing isn't liked too well. Just wondering out loud.

(more ramblings of a personal nature, nothing to see here)

Honestly, I wish that Dorian and Sera had been genderswapped, so we could see the truth or falsehood of this matter.

Well, Varric only beat Leliana by a sliver, IIRC.

I'll get over Varric beating Leliana some year I suppose. maybe not.

I didn't follow the voting in the end, but if you'd've asked me to predict the outcome of that vote beforehand given what I know of the DA fanbase, I'd've given you that result, with choosing between Varric and Leliana for the rogue spot being the hardest one to call.

They're all plot major characters, whereas the non-straights basically aren't*, which is another thing but anyway.

Did Warden win the hero slot?

*Except for DA2, but Varric was annoyingly likeable in that.

Sera would probably physically resemble Zevran, in a way. Female Dorian would probably have longish hair and the same teasing sideboob thing.

Doriana would probably be gorgeous, and then the Cassandra face hate threads would burn with the heat of a thousand suns.

Another fun thing. Honestly, I would have preferred it this way, because then I could have a love interest who actually likes magic.

Nah, we're fine with a character who hates magic. Variety is good.

Besides, you had Merrill.

****. No, it's not.

And Merrill was in the last game. And Leliana was totally fine with magic in Origins. Josephine doesn't seem to have a major problem with it, but her romance, in my opinion, completely sucks.
