I think there is a hit to approval if you ally with the mages. I suspect Sera wants the Inquisition to be something new that restores order and stability. She might be suspicious of too much canoodling with the old order.
She greatly disapproves if you ally with either faction and greatly approves if you conscript/disband.. I believe she thinks that they are both at fault in the war and whichever quest you do she wants that faction to be brought under the Inquisition's control.

Yep. I made the mistake on the first two playthroughs of taking her desire for a restoration of order too literally. She wants order restored but she also wants the old order punished for letting things get out of hand. This current playthrough I told the mages they were under my thumb now and got great approval from her.

It doesn't really bother me if she disapproves with your alliance with either faction. There's more than enough game to make up for the lost approval after that point,
I do wish she was similarly flexible at Mythal, though. That's where things go south. .

Yes. As I mentioned before, I think she hopes that the Inquisition will not only restore order but perhaps ensure that the little people get trampled underfoot a less while doing so. She sees the mage/templar conflict as powerful factions fighting amongst themselves and not caring who gets caught in the crossfire.

What irks me isn't Sera's reaction. It's in character and I actually agree with her in part. What annoys me is that conscripting the mages is seen by the game as supporting Vivienne for Divine. Allying with the templars, sure, but to me conscripting the mages means that you want their help but don't trust the judgement of their leadership. It doesn't necessarily mean that you want a return to circles.

Oh dear. I did not know this. So this is what triggers the game to ignore your pref for Cass or Lel in favor of Viv? I did/do not want that outcome.
That is irksome.

It's part of it, according to the wiki, at least. There's supposedly a whole system of points in favour of the different candidates based on conversation options you take and different decisions, the one at the end of In Hushed Whispers or Champions of the Just being quite a major one.

So now, the question I must ask myself is: Do I want to undo many hours of playtime just to avoid Vivienne becoming Divine? Man, I sure hope the uppity sorceress doesn't get the job.

I played through the game three times and I got a different Divine each time. How far along are you? The mage/templar one is just one of the things that can affect the outcome.

I was just trying to figure out how much points her exalted snootiness had in comparison with Cassandra. They might be neck and neck based on my actions even though Viv has low approval of my character. ![]()

I've yet to do Here Lies the Abyss and Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. I suppose it helps that I intend to ally with the Wardens, and am aiming to have a truce between all three at the Winter Palace.

You can still get Leliana even when conscripting mages. Cass too if you prefer her.
I had a pt going with an elf mage who conscripted mages, allied with GWs, put Gaspard "in charge" as Briala's puppet and this was on track to get Leliana for Divine (I checked the plot flags with the script thingy). I still need to finish this one someday.

Yeah, that will help. Although I think the three-way *snerk* at the Winter Palace favors all candidates or none... If you really want to sink Vivienne make sure Celene is nowhere near the throne.

I think I got the cookie scene after the romance started but I'm not sure. Having it unavailable while in the romance would be a strange decision.
Yeah, I did. I also thought I had missed it because I had started the romance and never got that option, but it eventually popped up. I think it appeared after I got some approval, collecting the Red Jenny drops. Then I thought I only got the first cookie scene, but after I finished Wicked Hearts and Wicked Eyes, now I get the recurring rooftop scenes. Must have just needed a couple of approval bumps. ![]()

How about if you keep Celene on the throne but ally her with Briala and keep Gaspard alive?

Damn. I was trying to avoid having anyone die at the end of that quest this time around. I know right off the bat that I have 15 points for Vivienne based on In Hushed Whispers and her subsequent dialogue. I swear if she becomes Divine I'm going to nuke my saves and start from the mage quest onward lol.

She loses 5 points instead of 10.

With an elf it seems pretty easy to balance her approval so the relationship gets stuck until you can stack a few gains in a row. Which is why I don't like approval as a mechanic but anyway.

I know we've talked about Sera's possible music tastes before, and Lukas's suggestion of Joan Jett usually gets brought up. It just struck me that she might like Republica too, (Well their two decent songs, anyway...)
Edit: Google knows me too well...

So it is kinda a false dilemma or at least, a one side dilemma that comes from her insecurities and not really something that the Inquisitor ever hints at.
There's nothing false about the dilemma, because "there is no God but the Maker" has been part of the Lore of the Chantry since the very first game. You could make a case for it being one-sided if your Inquisitor isn't a devout follower of the Elven gods, but false? Not even close to that.
"And say the other bit. 'You'd get it if you were smarter. If you understood what it meant to be elven'."
That's part of the dialogue from the scene with Sera after the Well, and it shows that she's had other women (including other elven women) that she loved leave her for not being smart enough, or elfy enough, or both. So she's got legitimate reasons to be afraid that the Inquisitor is going to do that to her also.
I don't think that Sera is by any stretch of the imagination "devout." She believes in Andraste, but she's not sure that a lot of Chantry teaching is any more than legend, and actually the fact that it might be scares her, hence her first conversation with you on reaching Skyhold.
"There can't be a bunch of gods and the Maker. Don't matter how much or how little you believe, those don't fit."
So she may not be dressing in a Chantry Sister's robes and showing up for every service, but she really believes in the Maker even if some of the things his followers have said about him through the years may not be absolute historical fact.
