She murdered a bunch of humans on very slim (as it turns out, nonexistent) evidence. After that, anybody going into the Wending Wood becomes fair game for her. It's very easy to explain her actions as a result of extreme emotional distress and incomplete information; it's extraordinarily difficult to justify them.
If she survives, she also, y'know, doesn't really show a whole lot of remorse for anything she did, because lolhumans.
Doesn't she acknowledge her missteps later on? She's not the type that strikes me as easy to show remorse. But if you play your cards right, you can get her to see that what she did wasn't right and she comes to appreciate your help setting things straight for her by the end of the story.
Plus, BioWare has always done characters that are initially emotionally unstable and/or want to kill the protagonist for any random reason. Velanna was no different in my eyes. It's what she becomes that I like about her, not how she appears initially.
