Apparently Sera just likes my human, no reservations or anything. This is weird.

It's the reason that the closest you get to long hair in the game is a small pony tail. They'd have to completely re-work the hair part of the game engine, and I don't think lower end PCs and last-gen consoles would be able to handle it at all.

They could still probably have better hair options than they do though.

BioWare has yet to impress with hair tech, if you ask me. Even FemShep had limited hair options across all three ME games, and only about a couple of them looked any good IMO.

Agreed. They certainly could've included a greater variety of shorter styles...

It's not even the length of the hair that's bad (although that's bad) or the styles but how unrealistic it looks. It looks like my male quiz has used too much pomade or something. It's clumped together for this awful painted on look. Beards or stubble are by and large awful looking. The stubble looks thicker than any male could possibly manage in real-life. Just really hideous the whole thing.

My problem is that the companions all have lovely hair that shows they have hair designing skills, but when it comes to the Inquisitor? It's just all awful, awful, awful.

I want to be prettier than my companions and advisors, damnit!

The "stubble" looks like paint splatter.

It's an arrow.
Next time you'll say the Eiffel tower is a phallic symbol.

@Uncle, yeah the modder says this: "Her hair does get a bit wonky when she does leaping shot and other crazy moves. It also clips a bit through her scarf when she moves her head. (I can see why the devs gave her a short cut.)"

One of the biggest issues is that they switched to Frostbite 3. DA2 on (the then latest version of) Eclipse had gotten to the point where they had some hair animation, which is why DA2 has the best hair options of the series. Frostbite was developed as a first/third person shooter, and was never meant to support complex character details like hair, eyes, eyelids, lashes, and toes (to name a few). BioWare was forced to add all this support (and more) into FB3 for DA:I. It's a wonder we got any of what we did. Don't expect much more in the next game.

Why not? Wouldn't it be a safe bet to expect substantial improvement by the time ME: Next hits? At least in theory, they should be able to fix all the lingering issues DA:I had as their first Frostbite project. The fact that they're dropping support for last-gen consoles might also factor into this.

I guess the big question that could answer yours is if in order to fix those issues they will get much support from the people who developed Frostbite 3 because BioWare did not develop the engine and I've wondered how limited they are in working with it?

Honestly, I don't imagine that being a particularly big issue for them. They were apparently already getting a lot of support from DICE (Frostbite's original creators) during DA:I's development. I would think by this time they've figured out what makes the engine tick. I don't personally expect to see these issues again in the next Mass Effect.

I don't expect anything from BioWare anymore. EA first and foremost is about profit, quality is somewhere down the list.

BioWare didn't have much support from the original developers when adding the systems needed to support a cinematic RPG, and they won't in the future because nobody else is using Frostbite for these games (that I know of). BioWare is going to be on their own in the mud pit.

I would hope you're right about that (not certain you are) given that the next Mass Effect game is probably my most anticipated title for next year (assuming it gets released in 2016).

Well, now that you mention it, EA does appear to have trouble recognizing that those two aspects of a project are NOT mutually exclusive...

I'm not certain either, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. ME: Next is supposedly targeting a Q3/Q4 2016 release date according to a bunch of seemingly unrelated rumors from the past few months.

EA's not going to change when a certain segment of the gaming population is willing to plonk down their dollars year after year for the same game with a few additions or slight alterations i.e. FIFA and Battlefront. It's something UBI is learning with A.Creed. Let's hope this isn't what happens to the BioWare franchises we love. I like DAI but what if the success of the game prompted EA to expect a new one every year? *Shudders*

I was thinking Q2 or Q3 myself but at some point in 2016 for sure.

EA already tried that path, it's called DA2. That also was a huge fail in how they limited the dev cycle.

Well, to be fair, they seem to have learned a thing or twelve from the mess caused by DA2.

I do agree that frostbite is probably an issue with respect to how good the hair looks. I do also think, though, that EA learned lessons from DA2 and gave them time and money to make a more polished product. I think the problem for seems to be that they reacted to the criticism of DA2's restricted scope perhaps a little too much and expanded the game out too far at the expense of some of the detail when you get up close. Hair would be one example of this. Non-reaction to seemingly major events during war table missions and the non-repair of certain parts of Skyhold as the game progresses are other examples that immediately spring to mind. I could have lived with an area or two less to explore if more effort had been put into these details.

I agree with all of that though I like the game a lot more than I did DA 2. I think it's a learning curve. This was their first foray into "open-world-ish" games and then didn't quite nail it. However I think ME: Next will be all the better for it in that regard. I hope...

Aithne's whole clan was brutally murdered, and she can't talk to anyone about it? What the hell??

Yeah you can add that one to the list of "why isn't there dialogue moments for this?!" that litter the game. I found it really odd I could not order Cullen or Leliana to get me some payback. It was one of those jarring moments. "Oh yeah sure my whole clan is dead but I am going to show up for work at 8am and put in a whole shift with no comment on the matter or visible signs of support or commiseration from my co-workers."

Basically! I mean, your advisors should have said something at the very least.

This is also what I'm hoping for, personally. A lot of DA:I feels experimental to some extent.
