The game has a damsel in distress plot and they spend half their time together hugging. If they'd been opposite genders no one would think they were just friends.

(Edit) Though I do remember finding a journal entry about Sam dragging Lara out to meet boys at nightclubs. There could be any number of explanations for why that was there.

you would be surprised how many people don't pick up on subtext or full on hints. They quickly jump to "they are just close friends", there are still people who think those 2 Sailor Scouts from Sailor Moon are cousins and not a lesbian couple

Leave it to homophobic English dubbing to turn a lesbian relationship into an incestuous lesbian relationship, lol.

As in it's not supposed to be an incestuous relationship in English. It's the dub's way of hiding that they were initially written as a lesbian couple.

Okay, I can see how that might work. Though I would have though it'd create some mighty weird subtext.

though its funny how English dubbing companies no longer worry about hiding yuri in anime, yet some game companies still avoid it

Silly Western stigma. considering most of the buzz kills in our society see any form of animation to be strictly for children only and gay characters aren't considered appropriate...And yet they have no qualms with Bert and Ernie.

Yeah though I'm happy that companies like Funimation and Sentai don't try to hide any of it

Yeah..but I don't think the LGBT community has to wait much longer for this sort of thing to be relevant.

I haven't seen the show but the new Avatar show has LGBT characters correct? Or am I reading the wrong information from the wrong people

Legend of Korra? So far as I remember, there is only shippers of a hypothetical lesbian couple in the fanbase, not any characters in the show itself.

In the comic books that have been released since the game came out, Lara and Sam live together, sleep in the same bed, call each other babe and sweetie...They're not really trying to hide it, but considering how clueless a lot of male gamers are (AHEM, The Last of Us Left Behind) I wouldn't be surprised if most people aren't picking up on it, lol.

Wait, there are comic books?

Also, Sayian, some of us guys are just hopeful... and don't want to fill the Male Tears cup every other game they play! :D

They didn't intend to make it incestuous, that was just what happened because the original show has them as a gay couple, and that's not something you can just get rid of by changing dialogue. Their words and verbal relationship was changed but all of the on screen touching, flirting and long looks were still there, so it ended up still being gay, except they were now "cousins." It was the English dubs attempt at removing the heterosexual aspect backfiring on them.

And Legend of Korra unfortunately doesn't have any LGBT characters, or even any real subtext. The people who ship Korra and Asami are doing so out of pure wishful thinking, Nickelodeon will probably not have any openly gay lead characters for a long long long time.

Lady Oscar was definitely a woman in the original version, but also very straight.

To be fair, when I played Lara Croft, I just never thought of her sexuality. Whether she was interested in guys or girls never crossed my mind. I imagine many who played game felt the same way.

As for the question of will straight fans continue to play Lara Croft if they openly make her queer..........why not? Its not like the game focuses on her relationships. You'd have to be quite homophobic to avoid a game where any romance will barely be visible. So sure, Lara Croft being the first big name Lesbian video game franchise character would be a big deal and a positive improvement in the industry.

All I shall say is I'd prefer that the developer and publisher have the guts to officially have Lara Croft be gay rather than keeping things ambiguous. I can't see most male gamers caring, this isn't a romance game after all. If anything, most young guys would likely be all for Lara being a Lesbian for obvious reasons.

I imagine the most common reaction would be: "Lara is a Lesbian? Seriously? Thats HOT!"

Say whats you will about that, but at least its not going to be a rejection.

I am. I wasn't hoping she'd specifically be a lesbian but I had been hoping to romance her with an elf character who I had decided would be female beforehand. So I was happy with how it worked out.

Just kidding.

I was planning a female elf playthrough from the very beginning.

And I liked Sera from the beginning.

I'd say I'm happy.

Well I'm someone who tends to see subtext in most things, but for some reason with the new TR I didn't begin to really notice it until the halfway point of the game during the funeral pyre when they hold hands. Then I was like "Waaaait a second..." lol.

And having had those kinds of conversations with straight guys before, that's surprisingly NOT the majority of the responses. Heteronormative straight guys can find lesbians hot so long as they can hold onto the fantasy of those two hot women still wanting to invite him into their bed. Once they get the realization that that woman (or women) are completely outside of the realm of their own male sexuality, they tend to get angry and entitled and homophobic, and trust me this is something I've experienced in person, but especially if it's a character that they feel they "own" somehow. This is a lot of what happened when Sera was revealed to be a lesbian as well, guys were mad because there was a pretty quick reveal about her sexuality and being 100% off limits to them, and they felt they were owed the hot female elf companion.

And before someone busts through the wall and says "NOT ALL MEN" I already know, thanks, lol.

I can only speak from my own experience, but since Lara Croft isn't a romancable character nor will the game focus on romance, this is a moot problem. Nothing in game is going to break whatever fantasy fans may wish to have. That said, I don't think this is an actual issue for the majority of straight gamers. Don't mistake the loud homophobic outcries to represent the majority or anywhere close to the majority. I've little doubt that if Lara Croft was made official queer the franchise would continue to have blockbuster sells as long as they continue to have the stellar quality of the reboot.
