I did try both, killing and letting Castillion go in two playthroughs.

I do like Merrill, she is a cutey, and she did try to do right by her clan but got mixed up in things she couldn't control. Well intentioned but foolish aye.

 

Its as Flemeth said, "no path is darker than when your eyes are shut". She refused to see the danger she was in and caused a lot of trouble because of it.

The danger came only from Marethari and her own pride, as well as how easily the clan was poisoned against Merrill.

I tried her Rivalmance, didn't like it. Agree with Isabela and enjoy her being a wild and free spirit was much more enjoyable, especially as a humorous Hawke.

I disagree, if it wasn't for Marethari, Merrill would be the one possessed. She made a noble sacrifice, which as Anders says, Merril wasn't worthy of. Very harsh of Anders but I can't disagree. Even when I rommance Merril its always a Rivalmance and ends with Merril breaking that cursed mirror.

 

Also, Marethari did not drive Merril away to Kirkwall, Merril insisted on leaving rather than giving up on repairing the mirror. As for her clan, well, the dalish sure are represented as very bigoted and arrogant.

Out of likes but agreed. Merrill wasn't gonna stop so she had to intervene and it cost her her life.

Yeah maybe, that'd of happened to Merrill, maybe it wouldn't. Marethari is very convinced that she's right considering she's actively choosing to become an abomination.

 While I also agree that the other romance is much more humorous, I think that the rivalmance makes her a better person.  So it's 60/40  with rivalmance being the 60 for me

If it wasn't for Marethari, the demon never would have been freed. Believing otherwise is to bizarrely trust an abomination's word. And Marethari was definitely possessed at the beginning of Act 3, and said nothing of it; it would have been impossible for her to have made it up the mountain's one path before Hawke did, much less perform any kind of ritual to remove Audacity. She was planning on killing Merrill and Hawke all along.

 

As for poisoning the clan against her, Marethari did that before Act 2.

I did not like Marethari. She creeped me out. I always felt that the demon planned to posses her in the first place. Just my 2 cents.

In a way , you could say that Merril really did listen to the Keeper teaching . I mean , merrill did what she though was right and was her risk to take out of love for her clans . And the Keeper merethari did what she did cose she loved merrill . Also one thing to notice here , is that Merrill get taunted not once but twice by 2 Pride Demons . Once if you take her in the fade to help fenyrel and the 2nd time is the demon in the mirror she is trying to fix . One can say , it was love + Duty (keeper) VS love+Pride (merril) .
