*shrug* Well..I'm done with the merrill thing . Back to our Sera...anyone gonna give her sweet nicknames during the Vromance ?

I really liked Merrill, but I was expecting my Hawke to end up with Isabela.  But... when it came down to it... I just couldn't say no to the voice of Eve Myles

 

At present I'm intending for my Keep import to have Bela stamped all over it, though....

Why it didn't leave first is somewhat unclear, given that she was, again, very obviously possessed at the beginning due to not having nearly enough time to both make it up the mountain and extract the demon (especially if you don't tell Marethari that, as I don't). However, I suspect that the demon wanted to kill Merrill, possibly as an effort to sabotage the Eluvian project... or perhaps Marethari specifically wanted Merrill dead and that was the bargain she made with Audacity.

I definitely know that Marethari wasn't doing all this to protect Merrill, because the plot holes are way too numerous. If Marethari knew this about Eluvians, why didn't she ever say so earlier? Why did she wait to ambush Merrill and Hawke inside Pride's End, instead of jumping off the side of Sundermount (her body still has elven vulnerabilities in elven form, as Merrill can kill her with a stab to the gut)? Why didn't she leave a warning to the clan about her own possessed status, or to-be-possessed status in the hypothetical that she wasn't already possessed?

 

She's certainly not "very obviously possessed". There could have been any number of occasions to kill Merrill (who would not have suspected) at any point in Act 3. Perhaps by asking her to meet her without Hawke. Even when Marethari tells Hawke and Merill that she made herself Audacity's prison, that was still clearly Marethari and not the demon. Otherwise she would have been much more filled with contempt or mockery instead of expressing a desire for Merrill to be safe or ending her conversation with Dareth shiral. As for why she didn't jump off Sundermount, well it's possible the demon would have survived that or prevented it but mostly because we needed a boss fight. You could argue there's holes in the story Bioware tried to tell but it's still what they went with.

What about a Hawke that rivalmances Merril and sides with the templars at the end?

I actually have one of those. My third Hawke was a a angry pro-order, pro-responsibility, pro-templar Mage. Honestly I didn't really care for the Merrill rivalrymance, though. The premise was fine, but in the case of these two characters it didn't feel natural that either would fall for the other. It still works I guess, but I felt like I was watching a movie where the two romantic leads have little to no chemistry. Of course, it could be also the contrast created by the fact that I just got done playing a Funny FemHawke Friendmancing Isabela in the previous run, and they had perhaps the best romantic chemistry of any video game couple I'd ever seen.

Asking Merrill to meet Marethari without Hawke seems unlikely to work, and trying to go all the way up Sundermount away from the clan would have looked quite suspicious. And Audacity is quite able to mimic Marethari's tone, as seen when it, well, does. It's clearly to Audacity's advantage to make it seem as though Marethari is still in there, so it can attempt that ambush it does later on.

 

The story Bioware is telling is one that's rather open to interpretation and contains no stated absolute truths. Otherwise, there wouldn't be opposing Friendship and Rivalry ways to look at it.
