lol Lightning rocks, one of the best female main characters ever and I always thought there were small hints of LightxFang in the games. But anyway wow were almost to page 500

Its not something necessary for sport Archery so its unlikely you'd have seen it. In war however, when an enemy might attack you while your still holding your bow, you need some protection. Its not much but its better than nothing.

don't dis Lightning, I've played every FF game and I enjoyed the 13 trilogy more than I did 7, 8, 10, 10-2 or 12, I hate 7 with a passion most over rated game in history, plus my gf cosplays as Lightning and thats her nickname

I think it's supposed to offer some protection from misfired arrows as well. Modern archers use something similar in the form of gloves:
Not 100% positive if that's actually what Sera's represents, but in the real world those gloves are typically called hand guards.
It may also keep enemy arrows hitting your bow hand
I'll try not to even though I can write a book why I don't like her. I've also played almost every final fantasy from 4-14 and things like kh and dissidia. Yeah 2014 saw a lot of great yuri's come out, Sakura Trick being the most bold and being way more Yuri than even Strawberry Panic. 2015 is going to start right also with a new OVA for Yuru Yuri
