Honestly I would prefer it to be visible so people could learn that this kind of things happens on TV to this day, I actually think it happens more often recently, because there are more lesbian characters on TV, but still most of them fall under homophobic tropes.
Though I'm under impression that few years ago they tried harder to make excuses - now they see no problem in insinuating corrective rape works and showing men straight up turning gay women.

There really aren't 'more lesbian characters' if you think about it.  Ofc they couldn't just represent these women as bisexual    Showing 'lesbians' getting conquered is more important.

 

And this is why I consume virtually no media without screening it first.

It's insane to me that bisexuality/lesbian sexuality is still too hard of a concept to grasp and viewed as a threat. The more things change the more the stay the same I guess. Popular media/TV can be total crap sometimes.

BTW, I wrote about "EastEnders" not even week ago, and apparently yesterday another TV show, "Hell on Wheels", used "lesbian sleeping with a man" trope, only making it even worse, much worse, because it insinuated that corrective rape of lesbians works. Didn't see it myself, but that's what people write about it:

 

The newspaper journalist Louise is a lesbian. The governor comes into her room in the last episode and has somewhat forceful sex with her. In this episode they show she can't get enough and she keeps coming back so he can **** her. He makes comments on how he has changed her and she basically is like I know.

 

It looked to me like he was starting to rape her/manhandle her without her consent. But she quickly seemed to encourage him. Just another show that will do anything to look different, whatever sense it makes. .... Then she seemed to say that she was doing it out of curiosity, to experiment.

 

Dunno how is this relevant in Sera thread. Do you have a video of that scene so I can form my own opinion?

When you have some in this world who insist that homosexuality is a choice and so-called research on 'curing' homosexuality, that kind of thing just doesn't surprise me anymore.

 

It's a sign of how ****** up the state of things is. Of course, using the media to convey these delusions is probably the most convenient way of spreading them around.

Well, Sera is a lesbian. She probably would feel strongly about it. Maybe she has to face similar damaging myths about her sexuality in her own world (I wonder what's the synonym in Thedas for "lesbian").

 

Unfortunately I don't have a video because it aired just recently. I learned much from the discussion about it on IMDb. Someone argues that it wasn't rape because She willingly came over to his place knowing what would happen. Now she digs it. and I would definitely not call it rape. It appears to be the classic "All she needed was a good ******* to straighten her out." I guess it's true because she just looks at him now and starts breathing heavy. It's actually kind of funny.

 

But that's actually the idea behind corrective rape - not that a man "really" rapes a lesbian, but that he's just doing what deep down she needs and craves for.

I really doubt there will be anything resembling corrective rape or forced heteronormativity in regards to Sera in DA:I, but yeah, it keeps happening again and again to lesbian characters on tv and in movies, so if the topic is lesbians in fiction, it will eventually come up.  There is room for serious topics as well as kittens and rainbows in this thread.

 

My personal fear is forced tragedy, which is why I'm trying not to get attached to certain characters (Cole because he oozes tragedy, Blackwell because he might be close to his Calling, and Sera because lesbians get killed off a lot) before I get to know them in game.  It's not that I'm trying to be negative, but after Anders in DA2 I'm not going in with any preconceived notions regarding happiness.

Sorry, but as a corrective rape survivor, I know what kind of ideas stand behind it. And this is one of them. Opinion formed on dozens of descriptions of the plotline from many different people.
