At the moment the only threads im lurking in is this and the twitter thread. Thankfully I haven't seen any spoilers yet, i'm being extra careful because I remember the time people went around the forums spoiling DA2 in topic titles before the game released -.- I remember how much I hated that >.<

May just lurk in this one now for the pretty fanarts ;P

Surnames are extremely uncommon for much of the historical early medieval period; when they do start to pop up, they are indicative of unusual prosperity for a given family - prosperity that is bequeathed, inherited, and which has a positive-feedback relationship with influence. Prosopographers track recorded surnames, and they line up reasonably closely with economic prosperity even if it's not exactly one-to-one. And by and large, Dragon Age's setting appears to have been crafted with that in mind.

Cassandra and Varric are both aristocrats, after a fashion; the Pentaghasts are one of the first families of Nevarra and House Tethras is a key player in the Merchant's Guild (apart from its history before leaving Orzammar). Same with Josephine: the Montilyets are an Antivan noble family.

Solas, Sera, Leliana, the Iron Bull, and Cole obviously don't meet those sorts of conditions. Vivienne is closer, but indications are that her personal power stems chiefly from her individual possession of unusual magical ability and Circle/court influence, not from any family tie (if such a tie did exist). Cullen's family is a blank, but he may very well have been some hard-luck commoner who enlisted as a templar in part for the prospects, and there's no hint of nobility in his backstory that we know of. Blackwall is even more of a blank: we don't even know whether that's his first name or last name (if he has a last name).

Dorian is the only real outlier here, and it's not clear why. Tevinter surname practices are kind of hard to parse in this setting: some obviously-powerful individuals have no known last name (Danarius, Alexius) and others do (Aurelian Titus, Maevaris Tilani). Admittedly, we know nothing of their own backstories: Danarius might have been a 'new man', and Alexius might have a surname that we don't yet know. But then there's Dorian, who is described as being from a "proud bloodline" - a phrase that practically necessitates a surname. How proud can the line be if it doesn't even have a name?

EDIT: I'm aware that tumblr, among other places, seems to refer to Dorian as "Dorian Pavus", but I'm not sure where that name is attested. If that is his name, it would close that little loophole quite nicely. And then we could move on to Zevran.

I believe Leliana is some Orlesian noble's bastard daughter, so she is clearly Leliana Snow. :S

To address the "Pavus" line of question, it comes from a very old leaked survey which explicitly referred to him as "Dorian Pavus."  However, we haven't seen the surname since then in official gameplay, so it's possible the developers dropped it.  The tag on tumblr came about when all that we had were a few pieces of concept art and that survey - back when Dorian was light-skinned. Things change in development all the time (take Sera as another example), so it wouldn't surprise me if BioWare doesn't intend to utilize a surname anymore.

Well..I don't care *much* for spoiler . I play Swtor (Star Wars Online)..and it is a haven of Trolls who love spoiling your personal story for ya . The game has 8 personal stories , when I started playing those bastards spoiled 5 stories ending on those 8 . I was so pissed , I deleted my toon and changed server . But the damage was already done...

Here , so far...I got spoiled for **********. Although...I think I just turn my short attention span on and hopefully by the time the game is here....I would have forgotten that little info

first thing i learned playing that game is to shut off general chat

Gen chat is the worst on the starter worlds and the fleets. Outside of those, it's probably 60% LFG [HEROIC], 10% crowdsourced newbie questions, and 30% random nonsense. For unguilded chars, avoiding gen chat is pretty bad too, because you miss out on most of the group content when leveling.

Just watched the new gameplay vid and OMG the guy playing it was driving me nuts, he wouldn't use basic attacks at all he would just spam his abilities and then run around waiting for them to cool down while his companions pretty much got destroyed

Yeah, that annoyed me too. No wonder he couldn't get a handle on the dragon.

About the Assassin's Creed comparison, I love AC but the guy was just climbing a ladder! We've had ladders in games since the original Donkey Kong!

I really wish they would show the banter interaction. I wonder how it works. Can we side with one person or another? Is our response determined by our relationship values? How does it work? I must know! Arrrgh! 40 days to go.

Which makes it interesting how heroes are exempt from this rule (Hawke, Tabris, whatever the Casteless dwarf was). Like they're predestined for greatness or something.

How proud can the line be if it doesn't even have a name?

He just has an indie bloodline, you probably haven't heard of it.

The Origin characters had surnames because of a bug. Offcially only Cousland and Aeducan would have made it, but something in the CC didn't allow that, so they had to give surnames to the rest as well.

That's a pretty weird excuse, but okay. As it stands though all possible DA protagonists have surnames, and all future protagonists in Inquisition will have surnames.

36-minute gameplay for those who might have missed it:

Companion AI does seem a bit off, but other than that it's looking pretty neat.

thank you for posting one without commentary, Phoenix. I wanted to watch the one posted yesterday but I HATE 'let's play'. Too often it's not about the game but mostly people too in love with their own voices. Not all of them but enough to make me not wanna watch those.

Yeah, I agree. I prefer non-commentary too, which is why I don't usually watch live streams.

I wish Sera was in his party though.
