I think my first post here was in May?

Too lazy to look farther back...but I think I started posting on these forums again in May.

I think I just spent two hours catching up...

My first post in this thread was like a month ago maybe? But I can remember when the Dragon Age forums were brown.

Shepard...

Wrex.

I did, I think we got mixed up because of similar (hot) avatars.

I don't find them confusing, in one Cassandra is looking left, in the other she's looking right.

It's not just Germany. I have a degree in French and Spanish and people STILL try to talk to me in English in France and Spain, especially in touristy areas.

Wait, the French speak English now, what is the world coming to? I dread the day when the Olympics and EuroVision stop doing their pointless bilingual thing.

Yeah, I studied it alongside Latin in high school, I've always loved humanistic studies.

The toughest thing was learning the alphabet, once I did that it was all mostly good. Note, though, that I never learned every single grammar rule: I learned the basics and then translated like there was no tomorrow. Oddly enough, my translations were always more accurate and correct than the ones made by classmates who learned all the rules and tried to apply them. I don't know how I did it, but I did.

Edit: oh, and I learned a bit of Greek by going there on vacation for years, no schooling involved.

It seems that this thread is quite multinational and multilingual, so what languages do people speak, then? For me:

First language/Mother tongue: English

Speak Fluently: French and Spanish

Speak a little: German

Know a few words and phrases: Dutch and Italian.

As yet I've not had the guts to learn any languages that don't use the Roman alphabet...

I'm going to give this a try.

First language/Mother tongue: English

Speak Fluently: Math  (what can I say, I had to put something here.)

Speak a tiny bit: German

Know a few words and phrases: Lithuanian (grand parents used it when they talked to each other)

Sometimes I wonder how I passed my German class. :)

Happened to me several times in Chamonix in August. I was thinking... Dude... I've written essays on art and politics in your language. I'm speaking to you in a better French accent than your English accent, and yet because you heard me talk to my wife in English you think I can't order a pancake? Grrr...

Well, technically you are correct, math can be a language: http://en.wikipedia...._of_mathematics . So yeah, it counts.  :)

Also, if it makes you feel any better: math has always been the most difficult subject for me to study. I've always seen people well versed in math as some kind of superheroes, all knowing, all powerful.

I'm pretty good at maths up to a certain level. I'm interested in science, maths, languages, history... The problem is that I have no clue what MOST interests me. I just find myself flitting from one interest to another and never settling down to vigorously pursue anything. I always envy people who say "From the age of X when I saw Y, I knew I wanted a career in Z." You can't get further from my experience...

Really, the only reason I'm good at math is because a teacher took an interest to me. I was an invisible painfully shy kid and when the teacher showed interest in me, I wasn't used to it and it felt good. She told me I was good at math and that I should continue taking math classes. Sometimes I wonder what I would be doing now if she didn't show an interest in me.

Well that sounds a lot more depressing than I meant it to. :)

I liked posts saying they liked my post, is that gracious or megalomaniacal? Or a disgusting display of like wealth?

I can see it being annoying for you, but I think it makes a certain sense for everyone who can to just make a solid go of speaking English. I like the idea of you both going through the whole conversation refusing to speak your native language though.

Oh yeah I know why they do it: Most English people don't speak good French and many non-French speakers will still speak English. It's just when they still insist on speaking to me in English despite my replying in French, I get annoyed. What bloody country are we in. anyway?  Don't worry, though. Being English and averse to confrontation this is all just going on in my head and I'm being very polite not shouting at waiters or anything.  ;)

To be completely honest, "New" Greek is way easier to learn than its Ancient buddy: the grammar is slimmer and easier to understand, so it's not like I achieved an impossible feat. ^^;

It's kinda cute, actually. ^_^
I've always been of the opinion that a good teacher (or a bad one) has the power of changing their student's lives for the better (or worse).

A scene between Sera and a femqunari Inquisitor at the Skyhold tavern:

Sera: (fills their cups with ale) So... you're a follower of Andraste right?
Inquisitor: Indeed I am.
Sera: Guess I have to ask, why Andraste and not the Qun? (takes a drink)
Inquisitor: (takes a drink) Well I am Tal Vashoth so according to it's own teachings there's no place for place for me in the Qun. As far as I can tell anyways (chuckles, takes another drink). And I don't really know that much about the Creators, and I doubt that my ancestors can become dwarven Paragons.
Sera: (snorts) True. But why bother with religion to begin with?
Inquisitor: Gotta believe in something I guess, what do you believe in Sera?
Sera: Right now? (reaches over and pulls the Inquisitor into a deep passionate kiss)... I believe there are better things that we could doing. (grins seductively)
Inquisitor: Why are we still talking?! (pulls Sera in for another kiss)
