My guess is that they are being nasty in a round about way.

In Sera's case the Devs said it outright. She doesn't like him, considers him an 'it' and refuses to speak to 'it'. I'm not sure where the source is, but at this point it will be shorter to wait for the game.

Yes, but please no random kid that my character is apparently forced to care about even if she's seen worse things than a single kid blown up by the baddies.

As far as I remember, the kid (at least as presented in Shepard's nightmares) was supposed to represent humanity and how it cannot be saved no matter how hard Shepard tries. They used the kid to symbolize fate and inevitability.

 

It didn't exactly work, though. We all know why...

 

Now...... I didn't mind the kid.  I thought it mostly worked.  Nightmares about random, faceless victims wouldn't work as well as an actual person... and a random helpless person we'd met like the kid does work.  The explodey death was moving, especially with that music.  It even worked to drag that face and voice out of Shepard's nightmares to use an an interface.  For me, anyway.

 

I don't even really know what I think about the possible endings.  I, basically, liked everything but the inevitable, unavoidable death.

Vivienne is a bit more extreme since she wants to banish him.
The banter between Sera, Cole and Vivienne is going to be hilarious, since it seems the won't talk to each other .
