Butch is not just about looks. It's about attitude too. She's not exactly a girly girl.

As a butch lesbian, that isn't actually true. the absense of femininity doesn't make you masculine. Mostly, Butch is about looks, and a bit of hobbies. Thats like saying non manly men are feminine. Really? Sera is more a tomboy.which is usually inbetween but usually read as more masculine because they don't do what is expected of their gender. I mean a non feminine girl is thought of as being boyish, because taking part in feminine things is expected to be a girl. But I always read tomboys as neither? They aren't girly girls but they aren't  Butch either.

None taken, like at all. it is kinda hard to place sometimes. And Tomboys are always hard to place, but I always felt they were non masculine but also non feminine, actually pretty glad Sera is as that avoids the whole war that can sometimes happen in lesbian communities.

Right... After checking through the night's posts on my phone, I'm now at a PC so I can post a bit more long-form.

 

First: Nice to see you back Alexia! On the subject of the word you used, yeah I wouldn't use it if I were you. Can be very offensive to those suffering from mental illness, but don't worry too much. Just learn and move on. We're all learning all our lives. If not then there's something wrong.

 

I've been on the old BSN and these boards since December 2009 when Origins came out, but it doesn't seem that long to me. I'm an old man in gaming terms, having got my first computer in the mid 80s probably before most of you were born! 

What a beast, with its 48k of RAM and games loaded from audio cassette...

 

I don't play as many different games as I used to but I love a game with a strong story and that's why I love Bioware... Also turn based strategy like X-Com or Civ. When I get a game it's generally something to commit a fair block of time to. 

 

In that respect I've long been happy to call myself a geek/nerd. If anyone has a problem with that, I don't care. Plenty of other people in the world to call a friend. I've been pretty much a lurker/occasional poster here until this thread. I've been drawn in and I don't quite know why! Must be the power of SPEW!

Ah! I saw one like that..........did you know you can find those ? They get fixed and are still sold in some places . I don't know what you can do with them..maybe peoples get them out of nostalgia ?

For people who have or know people with mental illness, it can feel like I imagine you might if you were to see someone use "gay" or some other reference to homosexuality as an insult. People are trying to get this more understood but it's not at the same level yet.  Just an awareness thing.

The way I look at it, is I'm just more special than all the rest... cause I have something that makes me unique... or it did, until everyone seemed to be diagnosed with the exact same thing, when i can tell you right now, they didn't have it. (ADHD and some minor dyslexia, and despite that I'd say my greatest passion after gaming is reading...)

Perhaps not quite the mental illness you were talking about, but it still is one.. or was one when i was still in school.... four years ago.... -shrugs-

Well that's the thing about the term "mental illness." It's as useful to understand someone's life as the term "physical illness". Doesn't really mean much, and also doesn't necessarily imply lack of intelligence (which is yet another term that it's tough to pin down.) I just use it as a broad term for want of a better one.

Finally caught up with all the posts in this thread, all hail the positive effects of insomnia! I just wanted to say to everyone here how much I love this thread, the awesome craziness and overall good nature of everybody here is simply wonderful. Also where do I apply for team Ran out of Thumbs? This thread eats mine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner it seems like :-) And now a reposting of the fantastic Qunari art with some banter, enjoy!
