Well that's the thing about the term "mental illness." It's as useful to understand someone's life as the term "physical illness". Doesn't really mean much, and also doesn't necessarily imply lack of intelligence (which is yet another term that it's tough to pin down.) I just use it as a broad term for want of a better one.
