Forgive me, but I'm... less enamored with this story than many others. This might be my own fault, but it feels to me like you're selling Sera short by having her fall into a pattern of submissiveness and Trevelyan's... philosophy? It just seems to be something of a disservice to Sera's character, since we've had no real indication that she'd ever enjoy entering this kind of pattern, especially with this setup.

I don't think it really matter's really, it's a work of fiction and so I don't see a disservice to Sera's character. I would love for Sera to be dom but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the story, which I have, very much. Sera in game could be completely different no one knows, I just don't see how Sera being submissive to a human in a work of fiction should matter at all.

I just sit back and enjoy the writing, it's an enjoyable story.

Gotta question for you all concerning Sera. The developers have said that she doesn't believe in the whole 'for the greater good' stance because she thinks that's an unjustifiable stance due to the pain it could cause others. Do you think that there will be a moment where she could become 'hardened' in the face of the decisions your Inquisitor will make or will she remain committed to her world view? If this has been brought up before I apologize but in my defense this thread is nearly a thousand pages long :-)

There's too little to go on for her as well as all the other companions. If I were to guess it would depend on the situation and how well u get along with her

That's an interesting thought, I haven't been here since the beginning so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned. I haven't heard anything about whether characters can be hardened in this game. I kind of liked that in DAO so I would probably enjoy something like that to happen.

Given the usual formula we see with companions, chances are Sera will be flexible to some degree. It would likely depend on how the Inquisitor treats her, however.

I don't actually expect it to work the same way as it did in DA:O, but the same basic mechanic will probably be there in some form.

We so little about the plot and the approval mechanics at the moment that it's really hard to tell. Anything that any non-dev said would basically be pulled out of thin air...

I think it is hard for companion development to manifest itself. Unless things change radically, there won't be a point where Sera actually gets any agency and makes a decision based on her character at that point. So any change is likely to be in her response to the Inquisitor making choices for her. Which... now that I think about it is actually kind of sad.

I like the idea of the Inquisitor influencing her, but I'm not so keen on everything in the world bending itself around the Inquisitor's incredible destiny.

If they do that again I hope it is more robust. The whole being best buds with Alistair except that one time you need to be a jerk to harden him was kind of silly.

I agree that they could have put more into Alistair's story after being hardened.

I'm really interested in seeing Sera's reactions to the human noble, I would love to see the inquisitor to be able to show her that all noble's aren't the same and maybe change her opinion just a little.

For what it is I think it is a cool feature. It's only really DA2 that plays around with actually having dynamic relationships with any kind of consistency or formality. It probably would have made a great rival arc, but they didn't have that system so it's just an interesting idea.

My main problem is you have to be great friends with Alistair to make it work, and I just can't do that.

I'm hoping for a lot more background reactivity this time round in general.

I still can't decide if I should romance Sera on my first or second playthrough, despite her being my most anticipated companion of the bunch.

I'm lame.

Who's the competition? (assuming you are not doing a romance-free playthrough)

Josie (with a dude quizzy).

I rarely start playing as a female right off the bat. My first playthrough is most often with a male and tends to be highly experimental, then I roll a female character on subsequent playthrough's to make up for what I missed the first time around. (Funnily enough, I always find the second time around to be more enjoyable.)

Been this way since Jade Empire (if you don't count TOR!). I still don't know if I should keep it that way or flip it in Inquisition.

Ah, serious competition then. ;) (mind you, it's hard to choose between the three ladies for me.)

I know hey!

Having personally met and talked with Allegra herself, I have little doubt that Josie is going to surprise many. Her romance is also supposed to be pretty deep for a non-companion, which is a major plus for me.

I'd actually love to hear Luke comment on Cat's writings so far.

I'm sure he's been lurking in the shadows all along.

My comment is that it's great to see people inspired by a character, but I'm not the person you want reading it. Not because I'm a big meany or something. But it's the same reason for the advice I give people applying for jobs as writers:

  • Use our worlds (or other well-known settings), so there is something familiar as a benchmark to show you can do tone, setting, blah blah "right."
  • NEVER use our major characters in your submission, because you don't want to roll those dice on an application.

Because you may think you know their voices, but you're up against a very specific ear that goes way beyond what is in the released character's actions and dialogue. It's a minefield of previous versions I've rewritten for tone alone after months of evaluation. There are dialogue rhythms and little things/words the characters would never do/say, stated only in dev bibles for direction of writers, art, animation, and actors. Plus future arcs in potential stories that only exist in the writer's head and our deepest lore. Plus written prose has descriptive narrative of thoughts, increasing the chances of stepping on some unknown booby-trap.

I've known some version of Sera buried in dusty design docs for nearly half a decade. It is not a fair test, there is no way players could or should know any of it.

So please, have fun. But if I show up, I'm a party killer. I'm afraid it's tc;dr.

too close; didn't read

Pics are cool though. I can't draw for crap. ;)

And that's exactly why I don't want you reading my stuff, Lukas. :D

Being a writer myself I know all too well how I would react if somebody took my character and wrote about her. It's impossible to appreciate the story because you keep thinking 'she wouldn't do that!' or 'that's not her!'.

I'm well aware it's your brain child I'm playing with here, and I'd rather not upset a brain parent with my silly scribbles. ;)
