Ooh history convo awesome, love history, fav subject in school next to art. Continued to study it happily in my college years, Irish and European, good times! ![]()
US history the dullest thing in the world... I prefered the one semester of Ancient history in Sophmore year in High School. so that'd be year 10.
I love US history myself, in fact The Civil War Era was my favourite era of American history, fascinating to learn about it, it ties into my interest in Native American culture/history also. Did my thesis on how they were represented in film/media from the silent era to present time. Really interesting, enjoyed writing it alot.
I think everyone sees their own countries history as boring, whereas everyone elses is much more interesting, simply because it isn't there's.
Much truth in this, however I adore my own history, particularly early 20th century Irish history, 1916 Easter Rising, The War of Independence and the Civil War. Love our rebel blood, deeply proud of my heritage.

Are you my older, opposite gender twin, or something?
Love history and english, seriously like the US history, am proud of my heritage, even if the country is pretty ****** at the moment.

I listened to a podcast series on Irish history a few years back. Really fascinating stuff. I never knew where the phrase "beyond the pale" originated from until then. If I were American I'd probably call myself Irish, as I have an Irish surname, but nah... I'm English born and bred, and actually I have Welsh and Belgian ancestry as well as Irish, so god knows where my "roots" really are...

I interned with an Irish lady two years ago. I can attest to this personally. Fascinating tales of endurance and heroism.
But I want to use this face
Spoiler
I believe the face will be there.
Btw, maybe one of the devs tweaked the face and isn't in the CC?

Gradually turnin' us all into potatah-eatin'-hoors.
And I'm totally proud to call myself a descendant of a fictional Irish Princess.
How many people can claim to have fiction in their ancestry?

Yeah... And of course a lot of the reason for that was the fault of the English basically treating the Irish like **** and then leaving them to starve during the potato famine. And then my Irish great-granddad died fighting for Britain in the first world war... Britain has some amazing achievements in its history but there's also so much not to be proud of. I suppose that's true of any country that manages to gain a lot of power...

I'm supposed to be a bit Irish if you go back far enough, though I'm not really sure how that works out.

Even minor powers have things to be ashamed of. They need to be remembered, but they don't cancel out good deeds either.

WW1 was indeed a sad war, thousands of Irishmen went to their deaths, "fight for little Catholic Belgium" such folly. Had no business in that mess honestly.

Not the first time. Won't be the last.

My Granddad was left an orphan after WW1 as his mother had died in childbirth. He was raised as their son by a different family in Leeds and didn't know who his real parents were until he was a teenager. He went on to land at D-Day and then met my Belgian grandmother in Antwerp, so I can say for 100% certain that I wouldn't be here were it not for Ireland and Belgium and their relationship in two world wars...

In France just after the war they called it the Last of the Last ("la Der des ders"), unfortunately, they were wrong. I didn't know that some Irishmen fought alongside Belgium. We learn everyday. ![]()
This just made me smile. I wish this had happened to me when I had an N7 hoody...
Haha! That guy is awesome.

Wow, you're from a family of Veterans, family history like this is always really interesting. I know on my father's side his family were deeply political and were involved with establishing the grass roots of Fianna Fail in their local area, even met Eamon De Valera on a few occasions. My family are still big Fianna Fail supporters, hasn't changed after all these years lol, politics just stick with some families eh.
I would love to research my family tree sometime in the future, would love to know if I had any relatives who fought in any of the wars or any who even fought in the Civil War here. On my bucket list for sure.

Wow, he landed on D-Day? Would you happen to know if he was part of the Omaha Beach battalions or did he land elsewhere?
I would love to one day meet and chat with a D-Day vet. Full respects for your granddad.
you guys are silly lol never change

Well he was in the British army so not Omaha, but interestingly he was attached to the 3rd Canadian Division and landed at Juno beach. My cousin has his invasion flashes and posted a pic of them on Facebook recently...

I bet there's some interesting stuff there. I have to say that I bloody hate Mrs Brown's Boys, but Brendan O'Carroll's recent appearance on "Who do You Think You Are?" was really fascinating with regard to his family's part in those struggles for independence.
