Just finished catching up on the Dragon Age novels, years behind everyone else.

Asunder, I think, is the best-written of the three that are out so far (I think Gaider's gotten better at the whole novel-writing thing).  A large part of that was Cole, because I could tell from the start that something was just "off" about his personality, but despite seeing what he did I still liked the character.

Because I thought he was really interesting, I'd like to see Cole cameo in DA:I.  If he's a DLC character, or we only end up deciding his fate somehow, I'm fine with that.  He doesn't have to be a companion.  I just want to have my Inquisitor meet him and boggle over what he is--I'm not precisely sure even now whether he's more demon or spirit.  It's hard to think of a demon having compassion like Cole does.  It might be intriguing to see whether he still generalizes people or he actually puts forth more effort to recognize them now.

I already strongly suspect we'll be meeting Evangeline and Rhys, and maybe even Fiona and Justinia V.  Cole is harder to deal with in general, both in terms of his personality and in mechanics of his existence, so I think it's worth a feedback thread to request that he be present despite the difficulty.

Anyone else...?

For a long time people seemed to think he'd be a companion, have we given up on that?

I haven't. Murderous urges and child-like wonder ho!! In all seriousness though, him and iron bull are the only 2 new companions that interest me (so far), I only because they are relative unknowns

I agree so hard. I adored Asunder. One of my favourite fantasy books ever. I think it'd be great to see Cole on screen. Don't care much if he's a companion or not.

Well, he's basically been AWOL from everything after the survey. I was thinking he was cut.

Still, there was something confirmed about a returning character from Asunder.

I subscribe to the "don't know how he'd work as a companion" camp, but I still want him in the game in some form.  He's just too interesting to not appear somehow.  So I support him appearing in the game, even if he's not a companion.

I'm still confused as to precisely what kind of spirit/demon he is, though.  He wants to kill, but not out of malice.  He has compassion, but dismisses certain people out of hand, if he doesn't like them.  That doesn't seem too much like the usual DA demon to me.  I'd say he's Deliverance, or even Death, but, not sure that fits either.  He's not Justice or Vengeance like, well, Justice or Vengeance-Anders.  Mercy might fit; he's not actively hostile and his kills seem to be of those who genuinely want to die.

Guess maybe we'll find out if he's in DA:I.

My theory is that it was a spirit of compassion who came to comfort the boy-Cole. When the boy died, the spirit found itself trapped outside of the fade and became a shade who clung to the boy's memories, eventually coming to believe it was the boy. The memories ended up shaping how spirit-Cole perceived it's purpose and at some point the spirit killed out of a corrupted view of compassion (even though Cole accidentally killed his sister, he freed her from torment). The power it gained from the murders made it feel more alive, and over time it slowly became more and more corrupt. Sort of like the Anders/Justice situation with Anders' beliefs corrupting Justice, but with a less physical basis of course.

I would hope if Cole were in Inquisition we'd be presented a situation like the one with EDI in ME3, if you haven't played it, you essentially have the power to give EDI a sort of humanity.

I'm holding out hope that he's not in DA: I and, if he is, he is in a single quest and then we can be done with him.  He's a terribly interesting character to me.  I'm also sick of golems and spirits (and protheans and geth, but that's beside the point) as party members.

We know that at least one of the characters from the leaked survey are out and that 2 out of the 4 have been at least semi-confirmed as being in the game (Sera has been seen in gameplay footage and Iron Bull has been confirmed by the German magazine).  That really only leaves Dorian and Cole.  At least one, if not both, are not going to be in the game.  The question now is which one(s) it is.

Also, we have had sighting of what looks to be the Grey Warden in the game as well.
