To me it seemed that his entire character development in Asunder was him learning to function on his own and not be a slave to his weird murdering impulses and be so dependent on Rhys, it would be a huge step backwards in his character development for him to only appear with Rhys and Evangeline. He's starting to become his own person/spirit/demon thing now and there are a lot of interesting ways that can develop.

Admittedly, I have about 150 pages left of Asunder so right around now he is just a sobbing mess and trailing after Rhys.

He might be interesting to have around, maybe as a DLC or as a side quest... but I just... EH about it all as him as a full blown party member. Maybe if we got Rhys and Cole was kinda... there in addition to him. Like having him serve as an invisible to all but Cole ancillary character... Like Dragon Age's version of a Tali's turret.

"Get him, Cole!" *Cole materializes as he stabbinates someone attacking Rhys only to fade back into invisibility*

The problem with saying he could be a DLC character is that he can't be a DLC character.  Either he's one of the nine companions or he isn't going to be one at all--he might appear in the game even if not a companion, but I think his story deserves more time and effort than just a side quest.  He's a very interesting character, in terms of what he is and how he ends up at the end of Asunder.

But, yeah, the devs have said there won't be any DLC characters at all this time.  I guess all DLC will be weapons and quests.  No new companions, because people complained they were having to pay for unlocking characters that were already in the game.  I think the real solution here is to find a way to design the game so that the number of companions is able to be modified, rather than requiring a framework to already be in place.  But that's just me.

There is a possibility he's the "deceptive wax fruit" the devs mentioned when naming characters after food.  I would have thought "surprise meatballs," because he isn't what you'd expect, but "wax fruit" or "plastic fruit" would describe him pretty well--he looks real, he seems real, but he isn't.  In fact he's a poor imitation, because he'll never be human just like wax fruit will never be as tasty as the real thing, doesn't smell like the real thing, etc.

Either way, if he doesn't appear in DA:I, I hope he makes it into the next game, or one or more of the next novels.

I meant DLC character as in... he will be a character in a DLC down the line. Like Tallis or something. But yeah... I agree he is an interesting character, I just don't see how he could fit into the narrative of Inquisition.

You don't see how an almost completely unexplained character that is a possible fade being/human hybrid that exhibits never before seen magic abilities during a time where the fade is directly accessible would work?! It's like they crafted him to be relevant to this game..... Oh wait :P

Yes but how would he work as a companion? In combat? What kind of relationship could he have with the Inquisitor or personal quests and the like? It just... I dunno. They may end up surprising me, but as it stands... I would rather not have a major character from any of the novels as a companion. It is weird seeing characters like that slide into secondary roles. I would prefer it was a cameo like Kahlee Sanders or Anderson being badass on Earthe while Shepard was being equally badass elsewhere.

Within the book's narrative, the characters do these amazing things and didn't follow anyone else and made their own decisions... it would be weird to have them suddenly look up to someone else for direction.

But those situations were "theirs" if that makes any sense. Now we are dealing with the fade tears and that's the inquisitions narrative. Also, I understand your first post better now, and partially agree. But Cole's greatest advantage is all the unknowns. They have a staggering amount of options to fit him in to the party and story, and if bioware does one thing right, it's their characters.

You could say that about Cassandra though.

Although I agree that it would be difficult to make him a companion. Is he still invisible? What class is he? How does this all work in the story, ect.

True, but I don't see why they can't use all that unknown on a new character.

True, but I dunno... I can kinda see the build up for Cassandra dragging Varric along for whatever reason and having them both get caught up in the Inquisition. I can't imagine anything that would make Cole comfortable enough to fight on the front lines of something this terrifying (for him).

I guess it just comes down to faith, I'm of the opinion that if cole's included they'll have it make sense. And do a good job with the character

Here is my issue with Cole-regardless of what he is demon or spirit, he is still basically a vampire. He kills people for their blood so that he "won't fade away".  The fact that he is drawn to people who despair has little to do with the actual reason he kills.

Given how many people we kill, I don't think that'll be a problem. In any case, the realization of his identity might anchor him now.

I'd kind of like to see Cole in the party, yes. If we had him and another female mage, that'd be the ideal composition for me (Adrian is best, though I won't hold out too much hope there).

For me it's the fact that in some of the comments Gaider made he said that not every character in the survey was a companion. He said some may not even exist anymore.

It just seems from all the stuff we have seen and has been announced that. Sura, Grey Warden and Iron Bull, are more likely than Cole, Cullen and Dorian.

Cullen and Cole already exist so that made me think Dorian no longer exists and I think cole may have been cut as a companion ages ago because we have heard nothing about him.

However there probably is at least one companion that we have seen/heard little to nothing about so he's still possible.

Well, we know Sera exists because we already know who is writing her. Lukas Kristjanson.

We have two character slots for whom we have heard absolutely nothing and only the War Room art has any possible companions in it. That is why people are hung up on Cullen and Dorian or someone Dorian-like because they're clearly in the art. ((I do like that ever since they have said not everyone in the picture was a companion everyone just went "OH, that's Leliana! She's just gonna be an adviser!! No one has started threads suggesting she might be the third rogue and that is interesting))

Gaider or someone already stated that neither Leliana or Morrigan would be a party member.

I haven't seen threads, but I've seen multiple people suggest Leliana might be a companion inside of threads. It really is all speculation, though. For all we actually know, Leliana, Cole, Dorian, Cullen and scribe girl will all be cut/set as NPCs and the last two slots will be characters Bioware has totally kept hidden.

Speculation is still pretty fun, though.  :P

I heard about them kabashing Morrigan as a party member, wasn't sure they had mentioned Leliana at all. ((I am coming back to the forums after a SEVERAL YEARS hiatus, so I might have missed some drama))

The fan consensus seems to have Leliana as the inquisitions spymaster(NPC) as opposed to a party member

Yeah, but he's shown that he's capable of controlling his impulses.  I doubt there will be a lack of anyone for him to kill if he travels with the Inquisitor though.

We also don't really know how he changed after the incident with the Litany of Andralla. That's really where the large amount of flexibility comes in. There were strong implications that changes came with his realization, but we don't know what they might be.

I would like to see cole's character explored more, but if he is not a companion i would at least like a nod to him or something in the game.  Like maybe you visit the white spire in orlais and happen to see a certain ghost wander in from time to time.

Plus the whole posession of a character idea shouldn't necessarily be scrapped, just maybe learn from the mistake known as anders from dragon age 2....  I killed him all the time just to quit his stupid whining.

As for the whole demon spirit thing, i believe in awakening justice mentions that the demons and spirits were once the same.  The only difference being when some spirits saw the world outside and became twisted with the desire to be in that world.  The spirits were the makers first children and when he decided they were failures, he created the real world...  Im pretty sure thats what the codex says somewhere.

If they're going to make him a LI then they obviously need to change the "child-like" component of his personality and I don't know if they want to change his character that much, is the issue. I don't really care if they make him an LI or not, but if they're going to then they need to make it pretty clear that he's able to consent. Otherwise it's totally not okay.

In other words, stop discussing Cole's nature in a thread specifically about discussing Cole.  I'm with Dragondreamer on this one, theorizing is fun and I don't see any reason we should stop doing so.

Oh, no, I didn't mean it that way. We should stop making assumptions, not speculating. By assumptions I mean things like "spirit good, demon bad, abomination crazy".

Here is my issue with Cole-regardless of what he is demon or spirit, he is still basically a vampire. He kills people for their blood so that he "won't fade away".  The fact that he is drawn to people who despair has little to do with the actual reason he kills.

Just because he thinks he's going to dissapear it doesn't mean it's true. He was extremely lonely, near madness, and desperately needed someone to recognize him. That's why he killed those people. It MAY have something to do with his nature, or not. Think about this: if we didn't know he's a spirit/demon, if he was just a random peasant, would we even consider the possibility that those murders could be blood magic? No, probably not.

He's also completely sure Rhys was going to forget him at some point, and that didn't happen.

And I do think he'd be good in a combat. He gave Lambert a good fight and even disarmed him, if I'm not wrong. Lambert himself told him he was fast, and Lambert is an ass. He was just learning how to use his power/skill/curse/whatever and still managed to kill 3 templars without a scratch, and safe Rhys's life by hiding them.
