Check out this video.

Obviously this doesn't apply to Bioware since the playable protagonists in most Bioware games are player created.

What do you think?

On a serious note, why does "conventionally attractive" only apply to females?  Truly, I can probably only name on my one hand, "ugly" male protagonists and that would be subjective to the individual anyway.

We need more Ellie's.  At the end, I felt like she was the protagonist, compared to Joel, spoiler free post.

We need more "real" protagonists, regardless if they're attractive or not.

Nice video  ^_^ Good to see a fella speaking out on in this issue; usually when women talk about it, they get bombarded with rape threats and what not.

And hey, BioWare isn't blameless, just look at DA:I. Three beautiful women (Cass, Viv, Sera) and so far no conventionally attractive male companion. Closest DA's ever come to not having a conventionally attractive female is Shale. And if someone replies to this with "Aveline" then I'm preemptively shaking my head and rolling my eyes at you :P

Shale was pretty good looking. Very attractive.

I guess she isn't "conventionally attractive" so she would count if she was a protagonist.

Also the whole "golem" story was pretty interesting. I learnt new things about the Dwarves and their golems.

I learnt about the stone golems.

I had an interesting party member to boost.

The Grey Warden had some crushed pigeons for lunch too.

Yeah, Ellie came to mind when I read the thread title. She wasn't really "pretty", but she was still a pretty damn interesting protagonist.

But beyond her I can't think of any. Maybe Alyx Vance from Half-Life? She's not ugly, but she's not gorgeous.

Hang on! Isn't Ellen Page's face "Trademarked"? :P

Well so much for making a video game character look like a real person. :P

For all those actresses who look like Ellen Page....

Ask Ellen Page's lawyer permission before going into an acting career. :P

Just kidding.

I think it would be a refreshing change from the norm, but considering how big of a deal so many of these companies make just to stick a female on the cover of a game something tells me they are not mature enough to handle an ugly one properly.

Drawing a pretty female is actually difficult. Really difficult to pull off.

Drawing an ugly female is easy. Heck being bad at drawing actually helps when you're drawing an ugly female.

At the end of the day, this is the most important thing.

Why is there a picture of 13 year old girl in this thread?  A girl with big green eyes, I might add.

"A playable developer created character with unique personal motivations that don't fall into the usual stereotypes, is not dependent on another character in some trite way, and is original and creative."

I swear to god, I can't think of any video game character that actually fits this model, male or female. All of them that do well in one of two fields, end up falling heavily into the others.

EDIT: BWAH HA HA HA HA OH WOW! Well played sir, well played. (Finally saw what he thinks is a "good" female character)

EDIT2: Addendum to reaction above.

Why can't we go for both handsome and well written, regardless of gender? I don't see any special appeal in an unattractive protagonist, being unattractive doesn't make you more interesting.

Jim Sterling does a lot of random stuff that has nothing to do with what he's talking about.

There is a type of humour called "non-sequitur" where something is funny just because it's irrelevant and random.

No one's talking about drawing anything or how difficult it is. He's saying sticking an unattractive female in a lead role would be really difficult considering that sticking a female on the cover of a video game is already bad enough as it is.

The point is that men can don't have to be attractive.

Women do have to be attractive.

A trend in and of itself can be sexist.

Those who are part of the problem are not always sexist, but the trend is.

Let's say there are for example a lack of non-whites in video games.

The developers who produce games where only non-whites appear are not necessarily racist.

However the trend of non-whites having little to no representation is racist.

Using the same logic:

You don't have to be sexist to contribute towards a sexist trend.

Depends on how she looks, Tomb Raider was always very succesful.

Lara Croft is also the epitome of hot but bland, the writers barely bothered to give her any personality whatsoever.

This has to do with people wanting "realism" in their gaming experience I think. People want societal norms to be reflected. Every woman you run across doesn't look like a model, so why does every female in a lead role look like one?

I see what you mean, but my point is that protagonists of both genders should be rather attractive, because it increases the appeal while not adding to the trend you mentioned. I also believe games should have more ethnically diverse characters in major roles.
