I don't think I ended up with significant rivalry with anyone, I ended up killing Fenris in the end game once though

It's easy to max out Fen and Anders though (**** I usually have Anders maxed out by the end of act 1). Merrill too. Isabela is a pita to rival if you want to romance her because she's so time limited  and you have to take a 20 point friendship hit (that and her rivalry gains are so annoying and most revolve around you being an ******* I can max out everyone else without needing to be an ass but her.)

I usually get Isabela, Varric, and... that might be it maxed for friendship, no one for rivalry

 

to get the achievement I went for Anders, Fenris, and Merrill as well, it was almost painful sometimes

 Isabela and Varric are easy for friendship. Just have to pick mostly middle options. (well Varric's easy friendship period.)

 

Merrill's really easy as well. Just do all her quests as long as your constant in being against her using bloodmagic/repairing the mirror you can max her. She's the one companion I never have to drag around and can still successfully max. It helps that even if you're nice to her and have high friendship her score reverses itself once you refuse to give her the knife.

Offering to do things for free earns rivalry points with Isabela, the trick is having only so many of those in Act I. I always forget about her and end up using up all those opportunities to turn down money before she is around to get mad about it.

That would require a more in depth playthroughof DA2, I am in no hurry for that

I really do wish it devolved into a fistfight with rivalry companions more often. Most you get with Fenris is that wall slam. Which while hot I did want more of.
