Also, for the newer peeps who are just having fun, here is a class that can use low level weapons and still stomp (or burn and melt) all of the things. I think its a pretty decent idea for people who have been fighting RNG - a non-weapons dependent class.
Can it get lame? Sure! Thats where other builds come into play. Flamerless trooper is just a mean killing machine.
My N7HQ holds the "hybrid" Trooper build CrashUrStox gave me.
The novelty of "hiding" the reload animation of a Claymore or Talon completely by immediately using flamer when the clip's empty, only to be able to re-use the weapon on cooldown was more than enough to soften my previous distaste for the kit.
And, using it this way makes "flamerspam" impossible...an added bonus.
Hybrid 6/5/6/6/3 build with my trusty Javelin: the best of both worlds. This is how I play him:
Saboteur and Vorcha Hunter off of the top of my head.
This is how I want to run him when I get more reset cards. I haven't been able to test this particular build yet but I have played him with the hunter mode before, just not the venom and HM on him at least. I kinda took the number spec from my current vorcha sentinel and hunter engy build. But the trooper build I have in mind with this utilizes all his powers while having fun with the venom. 
I'll play him every now and again but I don't play him too often.
Not a big fan of either Flamer or "Weapons Platform" characters, I occasionally run a 06666 shield recharge build with sth. like Crusader/Indra & Drill Rounds. Pretty high-powered damage & wallhacks, but not too high on my "maximum fun characters" list either. I still find this character more fun than typical "RHA" weapon setups f.ex. with Typhoon or Particle Rifle.

Flammerless GT is a great class as you don't spam powers which means a wider variety of weapons can be selected for his loadout. Because of this you can use a Geth Spitfire and a Black Widow without being hindered by slow cooldown which in defiantly increases his usefulness as a weapons platform. Some say GI is the best weapons platform because of the TC DMG bonus but in reality with cooldowns thrown into the mix, GT is more versatile with what weapons you can use at peak performance. We all know putting heavier guns like Typhoon and Geth Spitfire along with a side arm on a GI would make his cooldown horrible and thus decrease his performance but the GT is not effected in the same way. IMHO Flammerless GT>GI
Volus are pretty boring tbh
What?!? Volus engineer is the best character in the game! But only fun gold+. Silver is boring, no need for RM or PM, things die to quick. Also best played with either AIU and Asari. For me at least, pick the butts you like to look at. For the trooper I go full flame, but hacked my peaesstree so that the stoopid flame noise is replaced by invaderone saying "OOOOOH THE CHEEEEEZE" over and over.
Ok, I didn't really do that as I don't know how. But if I could do that I would play the trooper way more often.

Flameless GT w/ Spitfire (therm scope/HV Barrell) & Claymore (Omni blade/HV Barrel) > GI with same load out. That is probably true. GI recharge times approaching 30 seconds. So the next time you are planning on using those guns, now you know which character to use.
