Up until my last playthrough, I always killed him by stealing the acorn outright. I only recently discovered that you can trade the book Cammen gives you and leave him to do his crazy old man jig by himself.
I'd like to see some pretty odd characters throughout the game, though. With the veil torn, I can't imagine that there wouldn't be a few crazies spouting off about the end of the world and other assorted screwballs.
