Was the increase in swearing due to the different writers?

And most of the other videos. At least the official launch trailer felt epic and more like classic sci-fi for the most part.

Loud  manly weaping will be heard the world over I am sure.

I do somewhat agree on the "mature" part of things.  I always thought it was a poor term for this type of thing, it really is "not for kids".  There is very little mature about the movies I watvh or the games i play, but i owuld not show them to a kid, intentionally at least.

If they overdo the amount of swearing then it'll ruin the games flow, but from what ive seen so far it's mainly stuff like SuZe's personalty and a few reasonable swears from others more than every other word being a bad one.

The game is rated mature so i'd expect some sort of bad language as part of the whole badass renegades fighting for the lost image the game is presenting, maybe they could add a patch so those who dont like it cant filter it out for a more pg rated experience at a later date though.

Ignoring any increased swearing from Shepard (tbh it's probably most just renegade shep anyway) characters like Subject Zero just seem like they would curse more because that's who they are.

ME1 feels like it was made by veterans and fans of old classic sci-fi appealing to fans of the genre. ME2 feels like it was made by modern Hollywood youngsters going for the mainstream and trying to just make dollars.

Been following your posts for a while, and it seems that you just don't like anything about this game. It confuses me why you spend so much time discussing it.

If only that were the worst thing happening in ME2.  /sigh

When did ME1's writers leave? Or did I misunderstand the OP.

I thought Drew Karpyshyn was part of ME2 and writing a 3rd book in the ME universe.

Drew did work on ME2, but he left a while back to go to the Austin studio and work on TOR.  He's no longer the head writer, though I suspect he had a very large part in the overall arc of the trilogy.  Chris L'Etoile left for another studio, though I think he did some writing for ME2 before he left.  Mac Walters, the head writer on ME2, was one of the writers on ME1, and I'm pretty sure Patrick Weekes said he came in to Bioware after ME1.  As such there has been a shift in the writers between the games, though it not a complete change by any means.

Is Drew coming back after TOR to work on ME3? I assume Chris isn't if he went to another studio.

I think its more about the day in age we live in, its getting more acceptable to curse and all that so your going to see it more and more in videogames, movies, cartoons (Family Guy etc) TV.. all of that, so it may be due to that... thats my two cents anyway

I agree with this mostly!

Not the family guy stuff but just modern culture.

I mean most these kids cant be bothered to type YOU rather then U, how you expect them to actually have language skills? Swearing is what they relate to now a days!

And yes, most parents once again wont do their jobs and under 18 kids will make up a large portion of this games audience, regardless of rating, so appealing to them is important from a marketing standpoint.

Nice save.

And again, we here the word 'darker' mentioned by a dev.

Haha.

*EDIT*  I have nothing against the language and agree with it's usage.

Uh, Woo isn't a dev FYI.

I like there being some salty language in game.

Military personnel are notoriously foul-mouthed, and have been throughout history. Also, Shepard has mecenaries and at least one criminal in his party this time around. Both should also be fairly foul mouthed.

First off, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it, nor do I want to get in to any sort of discussion on whether anyone likes it or not.

I'm just wondering why Bioware went from ME1, which had virtually no swearing, to ME2, which if the gameplay videos I've seen (including the xfire one today)  seems to be just below the level of Saints Row 2 in terms of frequency.

I know that Drew Karpyshin and Chris L'Etoile left the Mass Effect team sometime during development  (they were the lead writers on the first) and wonder if it is in part due to the increased roles Mac Walters and Patrick Weekes have.

I know it's supposed to be the dark second act and that we go to seedier parts of the galaxy, but other than the Citadel we weren't exactly in happy sparkly places in the first game.  It's just kind of jarring to see, or rather hear, just how different much of the dialogue sounds.

When did Drew karpyshyn leave. was he fired or did he not work on Mass Effect 2. Isn't he writing Mass Effect Redemtion? i loved the other books he wrote. why not have him as a writer?

Doesn't bother me. Some people seriously can't go one or two sentences without cursing. Some people on curse when they're mad. Some people haven't cursed in years. It's just people.

I think that the orginal VO for Mass Effect was like that too but it got castrated - not sure tho. Polish VO of Mass Effect is really 18+ because for example Wrex is using fuc*s instead of commas. Shepard also swears alot.

This game is rated for Mature so I think it's natural people curse. This is not Star Wars where even the bad guys would be shocked if you'd say "fu*k you" to them.

Oh bugger off, and take your cynical, misguided and downright poisonous over-generalisations with you.

I'd hazard a guess that the words you pretentiously spew in EVERY SINGLE POST, are far more damaging than the odd "****" here or "U" there.

P.s. This is not unwarranted.

P.p.s. Arguing with stereotypes has never been a valid tool of debate.

I don't think I'd trust a foot up my butt, that was attached to a leg, that wasn't attached to a person.

That definitely doesn't sound right.

BTW "f*ck" is a great word, accualy its one of few you can build whole sentence with:

"f*ck the f*cking f*ckers" - really a flexible wonder.

Cursing has also standards, and is native to...pretty much every social group. I dont see a problem with hearin curses when they're justified by situation. What is unacceptable for me is hearing children sewar coz its "cool" to use F interchangeable with a coma...

Cursing is when you feel strongly about something. Or you don't give a f*** about what other people think. ***holes. Really, feels great to call someone a *#%#$#@ #$#@&%^(&)!, am I right?!

As long as it isn't gratuitous, I really couldn't give a f***. Overusing curse words is bad.

That there wasn`t any cursing in old SciFi is absolute nonsens. Battlestar Galactica, over 30 years old uses frack (because you`re not allowed to use ****),  and in older ones the people also curse. Like I said, it`s normal, everyone curses here and there. To europeans the censoring in this forum is already ridiculous. Make the letters of **** to stars, if that`s not childish.
