It's not impossible for there to be golems that think for themselves. It's just uncommon.
Caridin said something about the painful experiments gave shale her memory. It is the exception not the rule.

...now I want to defeat golems using the Sussman Anomaly. Curse their simpler, more robust but less flexible hard-coded rule based AI system!
For Dragon Age a rogue with traps can take out four pretty easy.

I don't remember this.

Did you take shale? Did you side with Caridin? If so the two of them talk after the fight. This is when he tells her. I'm sure you can find it on You tube as well.
I just looked it up and just recently played it:
The conversation starts with Shale: How is it that the woman was able to disable you and not me Caridin? He will say I do not know have you been altered. She talks about the experiments.
Hope this helps. This is not my video.

I have done that option but don't remember it. I'll be sure to look it up eventually.
Even though I don't usually side with Cardin I do feel it's more dramatic that way. Slamming the anvil, seeing a golem make a crown, and the way Branka says "You're not the only master smith here, Caridin. Golems! To me!" as she lifts the rod up. It represents another reminder of what Cardin created. If you side with Branka she just sits there in a cylinder of light with no cut-scene. You get 4 golems to help you without explanation.
Actually, if golems don't usually think for themselves then they're not really slaves. It makes preserving the anvil seem more justifiable; especially if used on people who would otherwise just be executed. Yes, it's ripe for abuse like any power but I'm just saying.
But Shale reflected on talking with her master when her control rod worked. Ex: asking where in the Deep Roads she was found. And it wasn't like she said upon awakening, "I can speak?!" It wasn't unusual for her.
Maybe it's just a plothole.
Could be. Good catch. I didn't think of that. I must have been too focused on the Shale/Cardin meeting.
I think Mike has it best:
"Maybe not actual intelligence, simply following predetermined commands."
or they have memory but no control and won't be able to give you a plan or feedback.
Congokong you are correct she does remember the past with the mage. She said she could not disobey but now I'm not sure why? We know she has memory but no control?
Thank you for the video Ghostbusters101. It discusses why Branka couldn't control Shale rather than how Shale can think and speak though. The "free will" Caradin speaks of is breaking free of the defective control rod's power I assume.
So it's a mystery, isn't it? Can golems think/speak when controlled? It's relevant to the morality of using the anvil.

Very good point. I must say I now see that I do not understand this at all. It would be nice if we could find out how the process effects the brain and why the control rod works? Very interesting post you have and thanks for posting.

Shale says Wilhelm used to promise her that he'd take her back to see where he found her if Shale stopped snarking at him.
