You might find this helpful, OP.Ah, as it states on all the screenshots "pre-alpha work in progress". The game is developed through a series of milestones and sprints, so you just have to keep in mind that some aspects of the game are in a different cycle than others. It all comes together like a very well coordinated dance at the end (not an intentional pun on your mention of the ball).
It was pretty difficult for me to play the game builds when I first started at BioWare because I had a hard time visualizing things that were not yet in the game when other aspects were there etc. But it's pretty cool now that I've gotten the hang of it, and we have Sprint Review Day to see everyone's work in other teams as they progress!
(Actually, my team - Online Development - is ending our sprint tomorrow so I'm going to be working late tonight! lol)
New screens?

The second picture with Varric is awesome! Love the shadows and the light through the trees.

Well...my only real complaint is Varric's hair. It looks like what some fanfic artist's do to other peoples fanart. As in, taking a legit artwork into Paint and doing a rather terrible job of 'coloring' the hair with the massively inferior paint tool to match it with their Mary Sue of the day. The color is just far too harsh and the texture is...not very good in comparison to say, Cassandra's.
Actually, now that I think about it, it reminds me of DA2's hairstyles.... ![]()
I'm hoping this is only the developing stages and they will add more detail. Looks like Solas isn't as horrid looking in game as his concept art depicted him as though, which I am grateful for.

Even in the real world there are ruins (see Inca Empire) with square shaped blocks and the first image looks a lot like that. There is nothing weird about it.
Clipping is something which is extremely hard to completely eliminate. In pretty much every game I have played armor clips at some point. The only time I don't see this is if the armor is completely painted directly on the character model and if it is a game without the character ever holding or carrying anything.
And what every city space? The last trailer was mainly showing the environment instead of humanoid mobs everywhere. Even in the part which was presumably inside Val Royaeux I don't expect every part of the city to be filled with people. It is not out of the ordinary to see an abandoned cart near presumably the Grand Cathedral without there being anyone in that "alleyway".
I don't quite understand your complaint about "placed by hand" because in my opinion environment details which are placed by hand tend to look better than procedurally created environments.
And as the above comment about something being the Marry Sue of the day, doesn't compute. A Marry Sue is a character with no flaws. Someone who can take on anyone without any problem. The only character in a Bioware game which, in my opinion, could be called a Marry Sue is the player character but I have yet to see any companion I would even call a Marry Sue. I also believe something can't be a Marry Sue for "just a day". Instead of Marry Sue maybe flavor of the day/month would have been made more sense as it tends to be called in online gaming.

Mary Sue's always tenuous meaning continues to breakdown. It currently means 'anything associated with a character that I dislike.'
In another five years. people will talk about how the cabbage that gave them diarrhea was totally Mary Sue.

@ Op. I tend to agree with you.
If these are the "best" screen shots to show off the game... that is a major worry. So far I've been impressed with what I've seen but these look like a major step backwards IMO?
The troll looks great, along with some of the environmental elements but everything else looks a little last gen. However, I'm not sure when these were taken or if they where "officially" released by BW.... so I'll wait & see.
I'm still excited for the game but this might be a little reminder to contain our expectations.
Agreed, until now I've been pretty impressed with the trailers etc, but this has reminded me to rein in expectations a little.
Don't get me wrong, still looks better then DA2, and I'm still looking forward to DA:I but I am wondering if these pictures were taken off say a PS3/360 or a PC/PS4/X1
The only thing I really don't like is the colour of Varric's hair, its weird seeing him a auburn instead of a blonde.

Green seems to have replaced brown on the colour palette.

Even when they aren't in forests, I've been seeing green hues everywhere. Maybe it's the Fade stuff.
Not saying that in a negative way, mind you. It looks nicer than brown.

I keep thinking Varric's new hair looks like it was stolen right off Sebastian Vael's head.

Or maybe, just maybe, something happened, in true BW form, and they joined souls. OMG, I've just figured out the secret truth of the universe.

The screenshots are really amazing and i'm very excited for this game; a weird thing i noticed is the rock at the left in the giant/troll screen...it looks like a skull...maybe it's something related to some quest or...just a strange light effect? By the way: the game looks really awesome. Great job Bioware!!!

That, he does. I totally agree.
I keep thinking Varric looks taller in these DAI pics, relatively speaking, than he did in DA2. Or maybe these kids all just shorter than Hawke and crew?

Thoughts?
"Say hello to my little friend!" (But Bianca in this shot is looking like a giant mechanical wasp.)
That tusked bigun, my friends, is not any ordinary giant. That's a troll.

Also, when that troll shows up in game, I really want someone to say, with sardonic exasperation: "They have a cave troll." <.< anyone? Anyone? >.> just me? Kay.

I think the screens look fantastic, but I'm pretty easy to please in that department! I'm far more geared up for a fabulous story/RP than graphics, but the screenshots have me psyched nonetheless. I certainly see nothing to inspire Chicken Little doom of anything being wrong in the development process.

I want this too. perhaps a tongue in cheek combat line when you fight a troll, you can say "stop all the trolling" and I hope the trolls are immune to fire.

I think the problem lies with the terrain quality and the "animated" style graphics(somewhere between Clone Wars and life like). The reason some screens look nice is because they cover a wider area, but get closer(closeup shot of Solas) and you see DA 2. The dragon looks like it's still got that "design grid" effect on it.
This is why I hope they release a HQ texture pack for PC.
