I think the problem lies with the terrain quality and the "animated" style graphics(somewhere between Clone Wars and life like). The reason some screens look nice is because they cover a wider area, but get closer(closeup shot of Solas) and you see DA 2. The dragon looks like it's still got that "design grid" effect on it.

This is why I hope they release a HQ texture pack for PC.

And a higher poly mesh pack like the SMIM mod for Skyrim.

Hasn't anyone noticed the aravel in the pic with Solas casting a glyph spell?

So you mean the game will look much worse by the time it releases? :P

Probably, they still have to add the brown.

We need more grey, would really lighten up the whole atmosphere! :P

Ignore the trolls  ;)  :D

Heh.

Logic, patience, and facts don't usually work, so...that is a very good question.  ;)

Funny.

It has a bit of a weird aesthetic that I can't quite describe. The environments have this weird plastic feeling and the game looks like a 3d version of a board game. There's just something about the environments and the models that make me think of figurines on a highly decorated field/locale. As if Warhammer were rendered into realistic 3d. Like look at the Troll/Ogre/? picture with the 3 party members facing it.

Yeah, I think it's also due to the lighting perhaps? Somehow the colors are off, too bright and light or something.

my thought with the first pic is "i had that lightsaber in swtor"

Haha, I thought it was a lightsaber at first as well.

I don't know. Of course the game does not look bad, but there are some things I can't really put my finger on and that dampen my enthusiasm. I also think that (parts of) the characters do not look nice so far. Others already mentioned Varric's hair, but I think Solas as a whole doesn't look very good either. His outfit is horrible, not only the suit itself, but the textures as well. That combat screenshot of him looks like it came from DA2.

It's still in pre-alpha though so I'm not worried

Once again, I must reiterate: The game, or at least most parts of it, are in pre-alpha. The game is unfinished. Also, as far as I can tell, these are low-res scans from the Gamestar magazine preview. Unless someone managed to get a hold of the actual screenshots, the others I've seen have all been scans. I can't believe some of the complaints I'm hearing. Low-poly? Plastic? Please. I'm not trying to be a fan-boy and defend everything about Dragon Age here, but I think the graphics look ****** beautiful.

For those who haven't seen it, watch the Pax Prime demo. Try to find one that's focused solely on the screen, in full, beautiful 1080p. Also, watch the Discover the Dragon Age trailer. The graphics are wonderful.

I think it looks great.

Companions look a bit weird in the dragon attack picture , seems like Cassandra is running like a headless chicken toward a wall.

Varric is about to throw Bianca away , I'm not sure about firing arrows by holding this above your head, what about the knockback?

The AI looked a bit wonky in the gameplay demo , I hope it's going to be fixed.

Anyway , compared to DA2 alpha pictures...it's just amazing.

I'm a bit worried about ennemies , the giant and the dragon are damned HUGE...I don't really like playing with the camera zoomed out too much, but I guess I'd have to.

Also lots of tree and such , and it reminds me a bit of Witcher 2 and pathfinding was frustrating in this game.

Hopefully we can jump , and not be stuck by every damn branch on the ground.

It's pretty ...but I'm the kind of person who doesn't look too close to details while playing.I mean when Skyrim players complained about the low res texture of rocks...I was like WTH I'm not playing this game to stare all day at rocks.

I think the screen shots look good.  The fact that there is less brown and more green is a plus for me!

And I'm looking forward to tackling larger enemies like Ogres and Dragons (but then I play Dragon's Dogma a lot).  Good to have a challenge!

And Varric is looking good  ;)

No, you're not the only one, Torayuri. I think the screenshots look great. There are a few minor quibbles, yes, but the overall quality is worlds beyond any other Bioware game. I think the OP is complaining at a high level.

...Everyone keeps going "at least it's not DA2" and stuff, but I always thought the graphics in DA2 were more than perfectly fine...? I really didn't see the problem with them at all? I thought they were a massive improvement from all the muddiness and brown in Origins, anyway. Besides, visuals were never the Dragon Age series' strong point in the first place. So even if Inquisition had the most average and unimpressive graphics I'd still buy it. And these screenshots look really nice to me too.

Geeeeeeez! ****** and whine more please...

Seriously! This game looks great, I don't know about the rest of you, but I remember playing RPG's when they were in just bit format....

And to answer the original post, no... I do NOT see the problem with these graphics... everything shown so far is gorgeous looking, including Elf Mage - Matt Smith.

Totally agree with you Lambdadelta. I saw nothing wrong with DA2 other than its over-usage of map and slightly annoying cliff-hanger ending. Bioware has always been known for it's story telling and they tend not to disappoint. People who are disappointed in things are usually people who don't agree with how things turn out 'In THEIR Story'. e.g. Tali and Sheperd running off into the sunset. (Sure it pissed me off that it didn't happen, but it was a good game nonetheless.)

I can't expect anything more from Bioware, but hope that they continue to give us great games like KOTOR and Jade empire...
(if you got a problem with graphics you should play with those two 'Polygon-Fests...')

Apologies for my spaz attack... sick of whining about supposed 'sub-par graphics...'

Same I had no problem with DA2 other than the copy-pasted environments, but considering they were up against the clock back then, I'm glad thats the thing that was sacrificed in the end, rather than other features of the game

Graphics are always the last thing on my mind, if they were my main focus in enjoying a game I wouldn't be able to go back and enjoy some great gaming gems like Baldurs Gate, Grandia, Breath of Fire etc :)

Calm down boys, lol. I was AWAY from forums for a year or so... I keep hearing this and that about the graphics, new engine and whatnot so I am asking a legitimate question here.

And if EEEVERYTHING is so fine and dandy for you, thats cool. But for me there are elements that do not fit under so called next gen graphics.

Furthermore we are about half a year before release and you tell me DAI is still in PRE-ALPHA. I think its troubling. Is it enough time to polish the game? To FINISH the assets graphical- and storywise?

I want a great game, a great RPG game I can suspend my disbelief and get lost in the world of fiction. Half assed (rushed in other means) DA2 and ridiculed ME3 undermined my confidence in BWs strenght. I wish for the best but I watch for any looming shadow.

Back to the topic - where can I find latest screens? Any link? I want and will judge for muself. Every time I focus on how details compose in the whole image I see sterile, empty, flat, square... some of the faults I see. They are not game breaking or anything. But I expect stellar from DAI.

Pre-alpha isn't really anything to worry too much about.  They have 6-9 months and every Bioware employee so far in the past few months have said that hasn't changed and it will be ready. Allan Schumacher has commented on this in a few threads.  Alpha and Pre-alpha are hard terms to define as they don't exactly have a set meaning, and it will even vary from studio to studio some times.  Regardless, some one had posted earlier another Bioware employee's response about it being built in sprints.  Just because you don't see it implemented in screens or videos right now, does not mean it isn't being, or hasn't been worked on.  It's also been stated several times that they were waiting from something from Dice for the engine, so they've already stated the graphics will more than likely be better than what they are now.  Allan also made a good point about when they were one week from shipping Origins.  He thought there was absolutely no way the game would be done, and was shocked when they pulled it off.  It can happen.  As to what to look for, go to one of the stickied threads at the top of the forums.  The "Discover the Dragon Age" video is a good one for environments.  There's also the teaser video on dragonage.com that's pretty decent as well.  Obviously its all pre-alpha so it won't be what you'll see when the game is released, but it gives you a decent idea.

Edit: The screen shots you posted look scanned from a magazine so I think some fidelity and quality was lost.  The light looks like a reflection off glossy paper when going through a scanner.

No one is saying anything about how the graphics were implemented in DA2, we are saying that the design choices weren't so good, everything was brown. It was even more brown than DAO.

Aha nice! My own favorite is BoF 2, despite it's horror inducing translation(hence my avatar)  :D  But yes, 3 and 4 I very much enjoyed, 4's story being some of the most unique I've ever seen. I still remember spending hours through that damn desert in 3 haha.

Notice how Solus has a light sabre in that first image?  He must have come from the SWTOR rift in the veil.
