Hi I never played BG1 before and started recently via BGT.

I soon found out the portraits of almost all joinable NPCs quite ugly compared to what I was used to from BG2. Now I don't know if its a problem of the BGT or its normal in BG1 but I would like to know if there is something I can do about it. Best in the already started game.

Especially annoying is Edwin's portrait which looks like this to me since I first met him + in a character screen there is smaller Anomen's portrait instead (which I think wasn't there from start but after I installed some mods but whatever).

I tried install several mods, custom portraits in BG2 style (no help and didnt like it anyway), BG1 NPC mod (didnt worked), BG2 tweaks (this caused the Anomen portrait bug I believe), BG2 fixes (not possible to install as I found it too late), Stratagems.

Even when I uninstalled everything this problem still prevails.

Also, the voicesets are horrible, is there a way to get rid of their oneliners shouts when I select them? Especially BG1 Jaheira makes really stupid sounds.

It looks like BGT (which I have not tried) works like EasyTutu in that it's the BG2 engine that's being used. If that is the case, you may be able to manipulate the NPCs portraits by using the Portraits folder. When I play BG2, I prefer Edwin's BG1 portrait (yes, really!) and a special portait of Imoen that is a remake of her BG1 portrait but with her new scar and a mage-like outfit. If we take Edwin as example, if you have a file in the Portraits folder that's called NEdwinS.bmp it will be used as the small portrait (on the righthand side of the screen) and NEdwinM.bmp will be used on the record screen. You will of course need the correct pictures with the correct sizes for it to look good. The 'N' in front of the name tells the engine to override the default portrait.

You can disable 'character selected' sounds in options -> sounds in-game.

Ok Im familiar with overriding from NWN, however I cannot find the original Edwin portrait anywhere for download.

One question - is the Edwin on my image correct portrait from BG1 at all? I don't really think so, but google didnt found anyone else with my problem so maybe it is?

If not, what is the BG1 Edwin portrait? I would prefer playing with original BG1 portaits while im in BG1 and BG2 portraits as I progress into BG2 later if possible

And how can I extract it, can you link me some tool for that? In NWN we have nwnexplorer that can extract files from BIFs.

PS. There is no Edwin portait in override neither portrait folder.

thanks

Ha! Found it. The pics already have the correct file names. Just dump the ones you want in the Portraits folder. If BGT indeed uses the BG2 engine, it should work.

The one you currently have as party leader sure looks like Edwin's BG1 portrait. Look here for all the BG1 portraits.

Hmm putting the downloaded NEdwinL and S into portraits nor override folder didnt work... Put it with a Edwinl.bmp and EdwinS.bmp names, even with NEdwinS.bmp and NEdwinM.bmp, no change ingame.

Oh. Party leader is my custom character, Edwin is the one with HalflinL

little update, overriding works but the EDWINM.bmp and EDWINS.bmp override my main character portrait and the Edwin still has that ugly halfling. I know I can workaround this by overriding the halfling portrait, but I believe there are NPCs with this portrait elsewhere which would then look like Edwin again.

How does game control what NPC has which portrait? I think I need to change it there.

Ah so you picked Edwin's portrait for the main character? Yep, then he gets one of the remaining male portraits (that isn't a standard portrait for one of the other 24 NPCs). This is how it works in BG1. For example, when I picked Imoen's portrait for the main character, Imoen got the one that's normally used for Osprey (in the Candlekeep training party).

I think the info for such a switch-a-roo is stored in the save files.

Your workaround suggestion sounds good. No NPC has that halfling portrait as standard.

I see, very stupid...

Anyway I downloaded the ShadowKeeper editor and changed it in savegame to use BG2 portraits for BG1 NPCs in most cases. They are better anyway, feel more specific and confident to me. Solved. Thanks.
