Should I Buy DA: Origins on Xbox 360 or PC

I decided to place Dragon Age: Origins next on my queue of games to play. I had a Xbox 360 copy of it a few years ago but quickly became disinterested with it for whatever reason (literally only played it 20 minutes). After reading really good things about it and finding out these are the same guys who were responsible for Baldur's Gate and KOTOR, I thought I should give it another go.

I'm not sure what platform I should buy the game on, though. I have an Xbox 360 (and an Xbox One but that isn't relevant) and a pretty good Lenovo laptop that I purchased this past year (it can run League of Legends or Civ 5 on high settings). I know now every poster will jump and say, "PC, duh." But my only concern is that I enjoy console gaming more than PC gaming nowadays. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that I'm already on a PC for work 40 hours a week. So spending 8 hours on a PC and going home to game on a PC doesn't sound too great to me. I think I just associate computers with work anymore. So I find coming home and crashing on the couch and gaming much more to my liking.

I wouldn't be asking this question if both versions of the game were identical (minus graphics) because I'd buy it on a console without question. However, I have come to learn the console and PC versions are different. And I'm afraid I'll buy DAO on the 360 and end up not liking it as much (or thinking in my head that I would have liked the PC experience better). Keep in mind, I played Baldur's Gate on the PC back in the day but played KOTOR and Mass Effect on consoles.

tl;dr: I'm a console gamer nowadays because I associate a PC with work, but would I enjoy the 360 version of Dragon Age: Origins?

Thanks!!

A lot of people say the PC is better. Mainly because of the mods available.

It´s really a no-brainier. PC all the way!

Faster loadings, better controls, better graphics, the chance of improving the experience with cheats and mods unavailable to the console owners.

Oh, not to mention that in case you decide to purchase DA3, there will be no hurdle in transporting your save file. You will be able to have a next-gen experience with DA3, and yet still retaining your save file from the previous gen.

Buy it for enjoyment. On first blush, that might be the console. But the PC version has one over-riding virtue, it is moddable. If you think you will only play it once, then go console. But, if you might play it more than once (several distinct origins), then go PC. Much like Skyrim, the mods make the game much much better. There are mods that fix the glitches, bugs and inconsistencies that mark every game ever made. There are mods for additional stuff. There are mods for new adventures.

Hope that helps!

I'd recommend PC as well, even though I'm a 360 player. I prefer lazing around on bed with a controller, but PC looks better and can be modified better. Lots of little visual things bug me in the default game (elven ears don't stick out right, armor selection is poor).

I have both. Pc is much better because you can control each character move easily. In PC, I can command each one without actually switch to them. The Xbox version you have to switch over to them.

Thanks for the replies!

You guys convinced me to buy it on the PC. I figure I'll buy the Ultimate Edition off of Steam for $30.

Talking about mods, though, which ones should I absolutely install? And do they make the game that much better? I've taken a cursory glance and have seen ones that raise the graphics, so adding those types are an obvious choice.

I am enormously fond of Dialogue Tweaks and the ZDF. They fix the broken things and generally enhance playing the game. Here is a list of useful mods with commentary. And an installation guide to go with the same.

You may want to wait on going crazy with the mods until after you have played the vanilla game once. The two mods I mentioned shouldn't really do any harm, so they are perfect for installing the first go 'round.

On the PC version I have lesser and regular health poultices on my bar which I use on tough fights.  I don't quite see how you spam health potions on consoles. I think it's also harder to use different abilities.  On PC you can just press the numbers of the abilities if they are on 1 through 0  and press the bar with your mouse for other abilities.  If you use poisons I'd imagine that PC is much easier to use for example.

I would play with all the mods your computer can hold. Just kidding :D I played mod-free my first time. then the second time I only had one installed, then I went crazy. I play with so many now...well, it's just nuts :P
I would go to Nexus, check out all the mods you may be interested in and install them. Have fun!

You can hotkey things on console. Granted, you have less options (6 assignable buttons), but it works well enough. I still recommend PC, but console works fine once you get used to it.

I can only agree with the majority. Console does not compare to PC. Graphics don't come close, but the clunky controls are the killer.

These mods I consider totally essential:

ORIGINS:

GT Core Rules Fixpack

Morrigan Restoration Pack

ZDF

AWAKENINGS:

Silverite Fix

Law and Order Fixes

Awakening Endgame Cutscene Fixes

I sincerely recommend downloading these at least. They iron out the worst of the bugs and the game should run more or less as intended.

I wouldn't say these ones were essential as they do not fix BUGS, exactly, but they do tweak little things that you might find annoying or immersion-breaking if you're pedantic (like moi):

Improved Atmosphere

Less Barking

More Dalish Zathrian

Practical Female Dalish Armor

Finally, these ones change various characters/armour so they more closely resemble the DA2 equivalents. It's a nice touch if you care about cross-game continuity.

Qunari Update

Tranquil Tattoos

Grey Wardens Of Ferelden Armor

And yes, all these are compatible because I have them all myself (plus one or two more which are just my own personal taste).

Look into enabling console first and foremost. That just helps a lot. I think wiki has a really good section on doing that. Make sure you get the fonts mod to see the console commands when you type.

The other ones are depending on what you like. I personally favor the ones that make NPCs better looking. Hairstyles, hair tints, face morph for alistair because that hair is just too modern. Check out mods that might give you armor you like, like for me there is a warden armor set that is based on the look of DA2 that is absolutely snappy looking. Has a version for all classes and through console commands you get it for free. Then there are mods that make the romance options better though they seem to be mostly focused on Alistair and some for Zevran I guess because women really get into those aspects more than men.

I would enable console commands though just for something like adding money which isn't really a huge cheat but gives you an edge right off the bat and saves you from chasing around side quests that might be of zero interest to you.

Quinari look so different in game 2. I was kind of stunned. But really much more interesting (and an awful lot like Flemeth now that I think of it, hmmm...)

I got sidetracked with work and forgot to check this thread. Thanks again for the replies. I was planning on starting DAO on this rainy day but instead a couple friends came over for a longggggg Civ 5 session.

I'm hoping to start up Dragon Age tomorrow. I'm torn about modding it though. It seems like the majority think I should do my first playthrough just simply vanilla.

As for my champ, I think I'm gonna roll with a male Elf rogue. I typically always run a human warrior so I decided to mix things up.

Sorry for getting off topic but it's nice to see a vibrant DAO community still years after it's release and just chatting with you guys to get your opinion on things.

Nothing wrong with modding during your first play through. DA Redesigned, for example, will only improve your first experience.

The mods are really what adds re-playability and soothe some wounds in the game. I'd go PC if yours can handle it. The promise of mods always gets me converted.
