The first thing I thought after Googling them was, "She's kinda pretty."

Blast it all.

I thought, stupid sexy trap.

^ I just googled him and if I wasn't already bisexual I'd probably be very confused about my sexuality.

I can confirm this latter part happening.

Well, typically it is the female that is depicted as a seductress and I don't feel a male version would carry the same weight...

A male that presents himself in a decent manner, has not over the top pleasing looks (just normal), posseses a silver tongue, is confident, provocative and has his way with words can make the ladies blush, aham...think of naughty things and play with them and their minds just as well as females do it with the gents. Trust me. I'm a fox. ;)

...plus it'd be a waste of time and resources. After all, you don't see people complaining about an absence of female Pride, Rage or Sloth demons do you? But that's just my opinion.

If they give the male version a different attack pattern, different powers et cetera it wouldn't be a waste of time and resources. When it comes to the story, it will be in the same category with the female version, but if we speak about the gameplay, it would be a different enemy type.

People don't complain about the other demons gender because they don't need it to do their work. A Desire Demon is all about tempting it's prey and the looks help because it better helps them promote and tempt (especially because they've been portraied in a more carnal desire fashion in the game).

One of the things that irritates me around this argument is that it assumes that desire demons assume the form they do as to be ****** material for whomever they're talking to. The idea that a creature is doing something wrong because it's not rearranging its body to your tastes is gross no matter what sort of social equality veneer you put on it.

If desire demons were people, expecting them to change their appearance to suit the protagonist would indeed be wrong, but desire demons are demons, and that is their default behavior. Demons "rearrange their bodies" in Origins any number of times, and the forms they assume include Goldana, Wynne's apprentices, Mother Hannah, Oghren's old drinking buddies, Sten's former companions, etc. In Dragon Age 2, desire demons assume the forms of Marethari, Vincento, and Wesley, as shown in this video.

If you find that practice problematic, blame the game.

If anything, an argument for the elimination of demonic shape changing supports the argument for male-shaped desire demons. It would at least allow them to tempt characters who are not attracted to women without rearranging their bodies to do so.

How would the game track this aside from flat out violating a player's privacy and asking to know their sexual preference?

There are ways but they are a little flimsy.

But still, what would be the point of changing them now, when they have already been represented in a very specific way, in two games?

I thought of one too but it would require a player to romance a companion before they could encounter a desire demon, which seems unlikely given DAI's story, while it also doesn't take into account if the player intends their character to be bisexual.

Though I was not interested in the specifics, it appears that Herron was a male Desire Demon in the Darkspawn Chronicles DLC.

True, they do have a way with women that can illicit the preferred reaction-the only thing is when men are played off as silver tongued they are typically put across as lovable rogues, or potentially the wolf-in-sheeps-clothing type so the seduction part gets blunted somewhat. That is, however me seeing only the archetype though. But it can depend on how he is written and characterized.

I am in no way saying there wouldn't be male versions or that it would be a waste of time and resources; after all there are Succubus and Incubus whose sole purpose it is to seduce their target. What I am saying is, it is a bit late in the development cycle to start inputting a 'new' enemy who is basically the same as the original but with different plumbing. I do agree that an androgynous or hermaphroditic desire demon would be an interesting direction to take though. The only issue would be how they would outfit an androgynous desire demon to make the player question which gender it is trying to be. Loots of billowing strips of cloth semi covering the body maybe. Hmm, this bares some more thinking actually. Perhaps in the next installment?

I was introduced to an Andrej Pejic just yesterday by a friend... and actually think that this is probably a pretty appropriate idea.

A desire demon would have ZERO chance of seducing me if I noticed it wasn't a chick. I'm just saying.

It's why androgynous demons would make the most sense.

What if I'm not attracted to androgyny? What if I'm attracted to drain pipes?

The beauty of using two models is that you don't have to track it. Make half male and half female (and allow the protagonist to indicate a lack of interest either way) and the entire issue is solved. Sure, straight guys and lesbians may have to look at a shapely male in a speedo part of the time, but straight women and gay men have been subjected to women in pasties for two games now. At least it's fairer that way.

And despite my attraction to men, I would never go for a male desire demon. Those things are monsters. Desire demons aren't supposed to seduce people with their form, they're supposed to represent a twisted and wrong image that implies seduction and carnal desire.

I don't need or want male formed demons in game for the purpose of ogling. What frustrates me is that the designer didn't really seem to consider that more than one type of person would play this game. Rather than being creative they just decided "Desire=women" and it's always a bit frustrating to feel like a designer didn't think of you when they designed a game. Oh well.

Personally I think it would be more fun if Desire Demons just showed up in male form and if they player chooses to make their character male the game just implies that he is gay.

Protagonist: "Sorry desire demon but I don't go in for these back door shenanigans, I'm a straight man"

Male Desire Demon: "In that cloak? I don't think so sweetie"

it's ludicrous to ask for a "male" desire demon.

the demons image is there to represent the overall idea of desire given "form" i think i speak for every healthy straight male when i say the current desire demon isn't "hot" its an outright ugly freaky looking thing.

with that said what I would like is to see a desire demon actually try to trick and deceive the PC, That is start off in the appearance of a male or female. appear normal as a human or elf or dwarf  using a random NPC skin that aligns with the PC's racial choice.

I mean our character especially mages know not to trust a demon, but if this demon looks normal? isn't revealed as a desire demon then what? I know it won't happen because bioware loves foreboding so much that any attempt to do so will ring more alarm bells then the harrowing and defeat the purpose but i digress.

Truthfully when people ask for a "male" desire demon, they justify why the demon looks the way it does. If they had the resources i'd love there to be a dialogue option telling the desire demon your not attracted to it. at which point the desire demon morphs into different NPC's of both sexes and all races asking which one you prefer (even a genlock) then saying something like "perhaps this is more to your liking" and morphing into your love interest (if applicable) or even the PC themselves.

the idea is "desire" not sex. it plays up on motifs associated with desire the demon itself would barely have an understanding of sex in conscious way. people asking for a "male" desire demon aren't asking for a short, fat, balding guy with pasty skin they want a handsomeish rogue in demon form.

the desire demons form has already revealed what you want, a sexualised male offering to do your bidding. why would it show up in this form if it can offer you said form?

In my opinion I think the desire demon should lose it's form. It should just be a floating spirit that changes according to the desires of the PC. As a floating spirit, there is no concrete model of what it looks like because it is well a floating spirit.

SpiritRealm.jpg

The premise of the desire demon should be a manifestation of the victim's guilty pleasures.

How about a little consistency and we just keep Desire Demons the way they are? Is this really a glaring issue people? Of all the issues we should hope gets addressed in this game, the sex and gender of a Desire Demon shouldn't even be near that list.

I don't think spirits and demons have genders, just forms.

Just out of curiousity what would be near that list?
