I'll do nearly anything for money.  Have to fund the war effort you know.  What's you position on Metagaming?  Is your character suppose to know these things? :)

I can get quite a bit of gold just playing the story and not being too wasteful (and selling things I don't need, instead of pointlessly collecting stuff). Pretty sure you could get up 300 gold or more, just playing like this. I can't help but metagame a bit though, since the game has been out several years now. I know too much.

The only thing I won't do is that exploit with the Pride Demon in the Deep Roads (where you can set up your whole squad to get his boon and come out with like 75g). Not necessarily because of the exploit, but because I think dealing with the Pride Demon is in poor taste with most of my characters.

I've done it both ways. If you go solo, then you will easily have all the cash and equipment you will ever need or want. It's equipping the companions that costs. Luckily, if you have done the Golems of A, you get the stick of sovereign summoning and so really do not need to do much for additional funds.

It helps to rely on a core group. And not try to equip everyone with good stuff. Eventually you have something for everyone, but you shouldn't go out of your way.

I do whatever I feel like doing, but I tend to remain in character throughout the whole campaign. In recent playthroughs, what I did at the very beginning was to destroy the Reaper's Cudgel. On certain playthroughs which I'm primarily doing for the combat, I'd simply assume that I've crafted tons of Potions and add the money via the console. But to be honest, with all the DLCs, I never really had to worry about gold. There's enough to get the best equipment for four teammates, more so with a dwarf noble. What is not possible is to get everything from the very beginning.

Yep, that's what is so evil about mousestalker's Stick of Sovereign Summoning. My fun run mage sold it to Bodahn instead of destroying it, and so she started the first mission after Lothering with Staff of the Magister Lords, Ring of Ages and four arcane tomes*. There's nothing left for her to want except for Lifegiver, and that is more a question of travelling thataway than of money.

In normal playthroughs, money is a big concern during the first dozen levels and frugal living is imperative. Things like Bodahn's one-time only bonus tome(s) and backpack, the Circle quartermaster's tome and so on are important milestones, and usually they require a bit of jobbing on the side. Nice phat loots drops are really appreciated instead of leaving you indifferent.

Going for the Grim Reaper is the ultimate metagaming move with regard to money, but it is self-defeating because it completely takes away one part of the game - money management - and so it lets you have less fun instead of more.

At least for mages who have very little to spend money on**. Non-mages can sink serious funds into kit, runes, traps, bombs, recipes and whatnot, apart from the extortionate amounts of money that you have to give to the Drydens for upgrading your kit.

*) However, once she got past the quartermaster at the Circle Tower she was down to 50 silver as usual and the world was all right again.

**) My fun run mage has a shopping list for stuff to take to Awakening and Amgarrak but that involves somewhat delayed gratification.

Metagaming for profit:

o leave Rogek standing until Leliana's thieving skills and the Warden's coercion are at rank IV

o take one rank in Stealing to get the Crime Wave quest line

o get caught stealing in Denerim and in the Dalish camp in order to book the bonus encounters

I usually just find the stuff off dead bodies and give it to the companions. You get two sets of armor with the Drake scales and another from killing the dragon during the ashes quest so that will help. You get the tome from Flemeth and use the robe that's found in the chest for Morrigon. The only things I actually buy is rings, amulets, belts and tomes. I just finished a playthrough recently and imported to Awakening with almost 400 sovereigns

I can usually think of some RP reason that my character would figure out what I want him to know. (My favorite example being my King Cousland figuring out Bhelen and Harrowmont just by watching the fight in the Commons.) Either that, or he's doing what ends up being the right thing for selfish reasons. (Best example being the DC supporting Bhelen so that every debasing thing Rica's done doesn't go up in smoke.)
