Between Cassandra, Morrigan, and Miranda, I'm not sure who my favorite angry yet sexy woman would be.

Although Morrigan is more rude and brusque than necessarily angry.

And this doesn't make the pairing any less nonsensical and contradictory of both character's personalities.

Not personalities. Situations. Cassandra and Varric aren't utterly incompatible - Anders and Varric got along fine, and Anders is even more militant and even less reasonable than Cassandra is - but the interrogation has soured his memory of her. Remove that, and they could absolutely interact with positivity.

Personally? I don't see it as a pairing. I agree with you in that I think they could only be friends at most. However, some people do see it, and that's fine. Going around like a militant and saying "NO YOU CAN'T SHIP THIS IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN CANON THEREFORE IT'S RIDICULOUS" is needlessly restrictive.

This isn't at all why we're dismissing it. We're dismissing it because it has no merit and is explicitly denied by both characters in the game proper.

No merit according to you. Is it really so hard to respect that other people understood a work differently?

Plus, "the game proper" doesn't matter. The whole point of fanworks is that it isn't the original canon. That's why modern!AUs exist. It's taking the characters/ideas/concepts of a canon and exploring them in more depth, whether that's wondering what might happen if the interrogation never happened, or wondering how the characters would behave if they were forced in a certain situation, or seeing what might develop if two characters that never interacted finally had a conversation.

This is not even remotely close to what's actually happening, but by all means continue with the meaningless hyperbole and keep painting the people who dismiss the pairing as an anti-fan cabal.

Then perhaps stop acting like it. You can't interfere with people's conversations with hostility and then complain when people rightfully call out that hostility as what it is. You're adamantly refusing to allow people to enjoy the game their way by insisting that your way of enjoying fandom is the only way of enjoying fandom, and that anybody who deviates from that is simply wrong.

And this is why I hate fan pairings, as a general rule. Some people like them, and that's okay. Some people dislike them, and that's okay. Some people feel the need to get really defensive of them when people dismiss them, which only makes the person getting defensive look like an a**hole.

But this isn't your attitude. You immediately replied to a post shipping it by saying it's "illogical", that it "makes no sense whatsoever", and that there's "literally nothing to suggest" that the pairing would ever be legit. You're being incredibly militant about your dislike, making the active decision to involve yourself in conversations that obviously don't relate to you for the sole reason of telling the people conversing that you don't like what they're talking about.

The point is, you're not letting them ship. You're replying to tell them they shouldn't ship, just because you think that they wouldn't work together. By all means, dislike a pairing! I'm not huge on it myself. The problem is where you begin to imply that other posters are irrational, stupid, and delusional for shipping something that you don't personally understand.

There's no need for you to act like that. Just because it doesn't adhere to your interpretation of their characters doesn't mean you should reply to every post about it reminding them how silly and delusional they're being. Debates are good, but not when you refuse to engage and just shut them down with a single sentiment without even bothering to try and see things from their point of view. Repeating "it won't work because it just won't" only breeds frustration.

Since it won't let me respond to each of these in their own quote block:

1.Anders and Varric were also just friends, not prospective lovers.

3. Nobody said they couldn't ship it, I only said that I thought it was stupid. That is in no way me saying that they can't do it.

4. When it's cut-and-dried, black-and-white, crystal-clear that Cassandra and Varric have no romantic feelings for one another (to the point where both of them explicitly deny it and say themselves that it would never happen), how could it have merit at all? You're straight-up inventing an implausible scenario for something to happen and distorting (if not outright ignoring) established character traits. But fan works are based in and are derived from the original canon. Otherwise, just change the names and make your story original. Except this isn't even being presented as an alternate universe type of thing. As it's been shown to me, it's "Cassandra would get with Varric if the Inquisitor doesn't romance her", which is patently false and untrue.

5. I dislike this pairing =/= I dislike pairings. It worries me that people are unable to make that distinction. The fact that I romance characters in these games at all should be indicative that I'm not against pairings. I'm not complaining about reactions to hostility, I'm complaining that you're entirely misrepresenting what I've said and have been saying to put yourself in the right.

6. Have I actually told people that they can't headcanon whatever they want to headcanon? Am I pointing a gun to their heads and forcing them to not pursue whatever kind of canon they want?

7. Because it's true. When not one, but both characters involved flat-out say "it's not going to happen", what more proof do you need that it won't happen? That Varric is still in love with Bianca? How about the fact that they have never interacted with each other in any prior instance that wasn't contempt? The whole thing reeks of "opposites attract", which is made-up, unrealistic crap.

8. I've been frequenting this thread for the last several hundred pages, more or less conversing about every topic that's been brought up in the time I've been here. I don't determine what topics people want to bring up (except for the ones I bring up myself), I can only respond to what's been said already. What you're saying is just another version of "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all". That might work for a 6-year old in kindergarten, but I like to think that people who are on these boards have the capacity to not let criticism (non-personal criticism, at that) get to them. I'll say again: have I told them they can't ship? I dislike it, but I advocate their right to do it.

9. Except I'm actually not. You're making sh*t up to make me look bad. I dislike the ship. That doesn't mean people can't ship whatever they choose to ship.

10. I haven't implied anything, because I've deliberately been pretty concrete and blunt with my statements. If you're gathering anything else from them other than what you read, that's on you. Someone can have a deluded or stupid thought and not be stupid themselves. Everyone does it. I'm also rather glad I haven't actually said "it won't work because it just won't" then.

Clarification: I don't 'hate' fan pairings as a general rule. I used 'hate' in my last post on the subject, but 'hate' is too strong a word. Rather, I merely dislike them, because most that I've encountered go against established character traits and force one or both characters involved to act in an out-of-character fashion. Very rarely do I come across any that make sense.

Seriously? I hardly noticed you.

To the both (or more) of you:

Can't we finally let it go? Not that I'm not always up for a good debate. For a good one though. And this is ridiculous. A says he dislikes cheese, B claims to be all into cheese. How much longer must the same people circle around it? There is not even any new input coming. Or do you really expect either of you to suddenly change his mind? Shake hands and call it a draw, can we?

The nose and head shape is a tad off, but I like the vibe this one gives off, like Cassandra is a conquering warlord.

Like Alexander the Great, if Alexander the Great were a sexy warrior goddess.
