Except Hawke's actions DIDN'T lead to the war between the mages and templars. The conflict between them was already brewing by the time Hawke was a blip on anyone's radar. The red lyrium idol is what drove Meredith insane and Anders is the one who blew up the Chantry. Hawke may have indirectly contributed, but to say Hawke actually caused the conflict is a gross oversimplification.

Unless you're tracing the blame back to Hawke because Hawke found the idol and Hawke found the materials for Anders when there's NO WAY Hawke could have known what was going to happen in either scenario. Hawke had no way to know Meredith would end up with the idol like how Hawke couldn't have known Anders was going to blow up the Chantry.

When the stranger walked into town, bad things started happening. That was the whole freaking point of DA:2, Cassandra investigating the starting point of the Templars/Mages war. It wasn't until the end of DA:2 that we found out that Hawke didn't even start the war, which was the same time that Cassandra found out. You're going off as a person who has already played the game, but a newcomer to the game like we all were once, wouldn't know that Hawke really didn't start the war.

Like in those action movies when the protagonist is getting interrogated by detectives at the beginning of the movie, because he's the prime suspect. We don't know what to believe yet, but as we follow his story, the truth will come out.

I don't think the vast majority of the bulk of people who buy DA games, the casual gamer, gives two shits about either of you two's problems with either game, to be honest. They just care about how it was advertised, buy it, start it, and never finish it. Shame really. And DA:I has been much more than "moderately successful." I honestly don't even know what's going on here. DA:I has outsold both previous Dragon Age games in the same time frame last I heard.

Anyone with good buissness sense, will tell you that one loyal customer is worth ten non-loyal customers. I wont go into the long complicated theory, because im tired.

And 'pinches cheeks' and whos an itsie witsiy cutie, when his all mad. you are,yes you are.

lolwat

DA2 doesn't even have a central narrative other than "Hawke becomes famous".

Which was awesome.

The central narrative is between Cass and Varric.. and who started the Mage/Templar war.

Which was also awesome...ish.

I thought Cassandra was awesome, right up until I romanced her and she turned into a simpering, indecisive ninny.

Swing and a miss there.

edit:

Whoops, I should have read all 1100 pages, didn't realize it strayed off topic.

DA2 story >>>>>DA I's , t'was refreshing playing an RPG that wasn't about the hero saving the entire planet, its a shame they didn't get to work on it a little longer though.

Meh it all depends on execution.  I guess in a way I did not really like DA 2s story but I appreciated that it was a character driven story through and through.  And I really like DA I's story and how it was executed through and through though its simultaneously not as character driven and even more so. :P

Well in the end its all subjective :D i think DA 2's story was told well , the game needed to be polished up a bit more sure but the story in and of itself was satisfactory for me, DA I's story wasn't bad at all but i didnt enjoy it as much as i did DA 2's.

I disagree; Hawke's decisions affected the entire world and had a lasting influence on global politics (to use a silly phrase for it).

It's not like at the end of Seven Samurai where they rode out of the village and the rest of Japan had no idea or even cared, except some farmers who didn't get robbed and die.

Act 2 was phenomenal, in comparison Act 3 was an abomination against storytelling kind.  Really.  I literally went after the second quest of act 2 and was able to spoil myself that the next quest would be the last one...that's it?  You had two quests that really felt like side quests and they were esentially the same bloody quest.  I think DA I did a much better job in telling a consistantly good story, throughout.  I did not dislike a single one of the main quests and I am rather fond of all of them and the majority of them I loved.

It's weird. DA2 is my favorite game of the series, but I have no interest in playing it again. It just goes nowhere in the end.

It certainly did better narrative wise then DAI

As I said I'm not going to say that you are wrong or anything like that , it's your opinion that DA I's story is better and I totally respect that , I just don't share it.

It goes on and off topic all the time. But there's always time for Cassandra here..

She's a person of faith, having a lot of things challenged.. you gotta expect that. I felt she mirrored my own concerns in this. It'd be worse off if everyone was sure of themselves, at this point in time.

But then, I'm not really a fan of the Inquisition (the organization, I mean). First thing I tell her about that is that wasn't a great idea.

But I think the good part of the romance is they're going through that together...

I don't recall saying that Hawke's story didn't affect all of Thedas, what I said is that Hawke wasn't trying to save the entire world ala Warden/inquisitor/99% of RPG protags , for the majority of DA 2 Hawke's just trying to make a name for himself and his family.

AH come on but I want to have a debate and then get out the knives and other cutlery and start jabbing each other's eyes out.  You're no fun. :P

Really though the point I am trying to make, badly it seems, is that I really did enjoy both stories.

Hawke was going to affect much more, I think.

They billed Hawke as "the most important person in Thedas"..

It turned out differently because people whined as if DA2 was the scourge of all that is holy about gaming. And that Bioware touched them in a bad place. So the rest of the story was trashed.

And even after DAI was released, it still hit a sore spot in one of Gaider's last blogs.. about what he had planned. He didn't blame anyone though. That's all me.

edit:

It looks like even the early stages had them conceptualizing some pseudo-Chantry, Inquisitor type of Hawke way back when... It's just that DA2 was an origin story

Oh great. Another thread bashing inquisition, while putting DA:2 on a pedestal. Both games have their pro's and con's.

I'm really confused here... DA 2. The game with multiple repeat levels. With no real sense of pacing, no sense of focus, and the choice between the chick so slutty that she CANONICALLY has an itch named after her and the girl with the mind of a 12 year old (who I admittedly adored, but look at my choices here, for christ's sake). That game?

The game that gave so many people idiot balls you'd think it was made by the writers of the Walking Dead. The game whose protagonist mostly just witnessed the city going to **** and did so little, and was basically reduced to a babysitter, a role given to him admittedly because everyone there was so stupid that they said "Hey, peasant guy that got rich quick by killing stuff, FIX THE CITY FOR US. ? That game?

The game that ruined Anders and gave us ****** Sebastian. That game?

What the hell is wrong with you people.

But I'd take that over some of the cons of DAI. I think DA2's pros outweighs it's cons.. while DAI is more set back from them. Just my opinion, of course.

I would say... yes. Yes, indeed. Because the side quests with no content at all were at least short, and the main and secondary quests all had at least some work put into them and contained some plot; the vast majority of DAI is contentless fetch quests (I was especially pissed off by the Exalted Plains "storyline" that "culminates" in fighting a mage who's loyal to Corypheus who came out of nowhere, and it just ends with no resolution once you kill him). DAI's main quests aren't bad, but there aren't nearly enough of them; they're fewer than in DAO and DA2, and seem like even less when compared with the rest of the game.

Also, DA2's romance options were far better.

Pretty much this.

Except the last thing. I like the romances more...and the companions more. They're all fun enough in DA2, but DAI gives me the warm fuzzies.. lol. Much like DAO and other Bioware games did. I just couldn't connect that way in DA2 as much. In fact, I was more interested in Hawke themselves.. and the two non-romances (Varric and Aveline). Along with the family.

I think Anders alone is enough for me to never touch that game again, lol. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game, and I appreciated what it tried to accomplish, that's about the most I can say about it. I do like the personal family stuff though.

And I see a pattern, of people claiming the older game is better than the newest with pretty much every gaming series I've ever seen. They do this in TES as well. Rose Tinted Glasses. Many of the same people who said they hated one game then later claim it's the best in the series, or at the least much better than the newest.

Not saying you do this, but many do. It's funny to see this now after all the hate DA 2 got before. I think what it is, is DA I shows what the creators were trying to do with the story, making DA 2 seem better, but that's something I credit DA I for, not DA 2.

I'm deeply frustrated by DAI's romance options. For me, they were Josephine, who's a great person but has an incredibly sparse romance, and Sera, who frustrates me immensely and has probable irreconcilable differences with me.
