I would much prefer a shield and anything one handed though.

I'd love to get good at that.

It's a pretty useless skill now, but would be fun. Not something I can learn alone though.

How many knights can you think of that didn't wear their armor in a fight?

But Magic wasn't specifically speaking of knights when that came up, you know? Only because you drag a topic another way and forget where it came from does not mean I am forced to follow.

I would definitely want a kusarigama. I'd never use it though, I'd be too afraid to even train with it because I think I'd injure myself.

Don't be so sure ;) When the inevitable zombie apocalypse comes, I'm gonna have a light modern shield, a round shield, and some sort of axe to deal with zombies when I don't want to waste shots.

The topic originated the other day (or yesterday, whenever it was) with Cassandra and her sword. Cassandra being a character in a medieval fantasy setting. Medieval pseudo-European, specifically. Knights are the most commonly remembered medieval European warriors in the lack of other specific context, and Cassandra herself is practically a knight.

So yeah, forgive me for thinking that, since nobody else had bothered to mention any kind of fighter, we were talking about knights.

No, no.. that was another topic. This was a new one starting today.. We were talking about crushing heads with a hammer.

Or so I thought.

If you have to go up against zombies, you'd want a crowbar. They're good for stabbing with the pointed end (and clawing with the hooked end), and they're good for opening things. A crowbar, imo, would probably be the single most useful thing to have in a zombie apocalypse.

I would hardly call it "crushing heads with a hammer" when it's just a continuation of whatever-the-hell topic it was the other day. Just "weapons" is fine.

If you want. They can tie together. The only time we talked about that other topic though was when I thought you could be ISTP, and mentioned that older discussion.

They might get caught in a skull though, or the flesh. I like stuff like these:

Light, quick, points good for head piercing and the other side's good for chopping limbs if necessary. Or head cleaving, whatever. Basically I want something I can strike and run quick with.

A sword wasn't meant to be used as a bludgeon by the handle either, but it was done when necessary. Using the point of a large sword to spear into someone is far less extreme. Doesn't matter what the intended method was primarily, you use the tool the way you need to for a situation. Its length is an advantage for a number of reasons, one being you can kill with it like a spear and at a distance. Which is one way they did it. Just swinging and chopping can leave you open as well. That weapon leaves you open in lots of ways.

And I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying it's as viable as any other method that gets your enemy dead, or people wouldn't use it that way, which they did.

I know. I even said, at least 3 or 4 times now, that you CAN thrust and stab with a big sword. The point of me saying that the weapon wasn't made for thrusting is because the sword wasn't made with that kind of action in mind, so it might be too heavy or too clunky to rely on being able to stab or thrust. You can also cut and slice with a rapier, but those are really only good for thrusting and stabbing.

In reality, if you ever have to spear someone from a distance, you'd be better off just using a spear or javelin or a lance.

I'm always going to be doing anything from a distance. I don't know what my wingspan is, but I'm 6'5".

The sword just feels natural to me for many attack types.

I must work with what knowledge base I have, alright? Should I ever be bored because you guys stop posting altogether I might be inclined to make a comprehensive list of all sword fighting schools in all of Texas. So you can say "Uh..... nope, sorry, that's all still really far away". Deal? ;)

I'm aware. I'm saying that it's perfectly viable for a reason though. One because I owned a claymore before and it isn't too heavy to spear with. A spear is better for piercing, yes, but if I have a tool that can be used more than one way, why wouldn't I. I said you weren't wrong in that it isn't made for that, but it doesn't matter one bit really.

I'm six foot four, so long armspan too ;) You'd be able to swing and stab one of those around easy. They're not even heavy.

Actually, now that I think about it, some of these were made with spearing in mind. Some have parts on the sword close to the hilt that work like extended handles, so they're more wieldy and you can stab easier if necessary.

It is viable, but I personally wouldn't rely on it too much. Especially if we're talking more medieval-era weaponry, since those were more often than not made customized for the knight or warrior that was going to wield it, so it would have been forged to fit their fighting style and preference. Historically (and generally), old claymores weren't made for stabbing as much as they were for lopping off heads.

A more modern claymore wouldn't be used for fighting (not in a real life-or-death battle anyway) by an armored and trained knight or highlander (and I don't mean the movie Highlander), so they don't have to be specialized (or, as specialized) and can afford to be more versatile and generalized.

All kinds of hobbies I want to start, but I don't get off my ass. Mostly gaming lately :D

To keep on this subject, I want to learn blacksmithing too. Turning out to be more complicated than I thought (as far as setting up an area for it).

I usually upgrade the offensive skill tree first and invest my XP in secondary skills later.

Or... do you want me to google far away blacksmithing classes like offered by http://www.ntxba.org/ ?
