I've always thought that assuming that Swords and Shields is comparable to Fifty Shades is probably overly harsh. It might not be Varric's strongest piece of writing, but that guarantee it's quite that terrible.

Authors are often their own worst critics.

I think she would like the love sonnets, and Romeo and Juliet. She might also like Hamlet, and the Tempest.
Sonnet 116:
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no; it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

It's my favorite, so I'd like to think so. :)

Shakespeare being more important than the King James Bible is kind of stretching it.

At least something like Shakespeare's Julius Caesar isn't interpreted as literal historical truth by a subsect of crazies, unlike the KJB. So that's one thing he has on the Bible. People KNOW that what he wrote is fiction, yet a startling number of people hold the KJB up as literal "this is how history played out" truth.

No, but she'd probably be a fan of Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray. :P

Shakespeare wrote a lot of smutty crap that could pass for a 17th century version of 50 Shades.

50 Shades is the biggest pile of...... *grumbles*

The sex isn't even hot. It is just the same crap every 10 pages or so. I ended up skipping most of it just to get on with the story (gah, the story) and then I threw all the books into a box and chucked them into the garage. I forgot they weren't mine to throw away and had to fish them out a couple of months later when my sister asked for them back.

There is nothing romantic in Twilight or 50 shades of Grey, or any kind of abusive relationships. Which are the very core of Twilight and 50 shades, thank you very much.

I never actually read the 50 Shades books because I heard they were BDSM which isn't my cup of tea, but every person I know says what utter crap they are. I wish I could write books that are so universally purchased and despised. I'd laugh all the way to the bank.

Eh, I wouldn't call the relationships abusive as such. Both Ana and Bella had an unhealthy dependency and both Christian and Edward were protective to the point of being controlling but really, there was nothing forcing them to stay. In both  the series, both And and Bella had equal opportunity to not pursue the relationships again but they both went back. The fact the relationships come off as abusive to some is the sign of poorly written fiction.

If I was going to label the relationships as anything, I would call them immature. It is the same kind of crap you would find in a relationship between two teenagers dating.

Lol. Your smut is hot, Warder.  ^_^

The BDSM is very...... slight. The most he does is spank her with a paddle. Or was it a cane..... The rest of it is just him being dominant in the bedroom.

If you want some really good books to read with an excellent story line and plenty of smut then I suggest the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead. It is sooo good and quite funny...... and a little heartbreaking at times.

Or read Warders Wesker fic.  :P

Either would suffice.

I like to think that no teenagers (who aren't mentally unhealthy, anyway) actually behave like this. Not a single one of them I know (who comprise 95% of my friend base) are into the whole "this legally-binding contract dictates how you and I have sex and see each other" sort of idea. I can't fathom that many rational human beings, regardless of age, would be.

But then what do I know, I'm not a lonely middle-aged woman suffering through unhealthy fantasies and delusions, like E.L. James.

For a minute there I thought you were referring to me. "What the ****..... I'm not middle-aged!"  :P

I wasn't meaning that, I was referring to the emotional aspects of the relationship. In the end, they are both poorly developed characters.

And I think E. L. James is married.

*stares*

You have no idea what sexual satisfaction is my friend.

It's taking a novice and so throughly wrapping her around the finger, her body quivers at the memory.

It's of making a impact, a impression that never fades.

Not even a decade later.

That's erm...what I conveyed
