It's jet black, but looks lighter with the caked in blood.

EDIT: That is, it gets that dark when there's not enough light to illuminate the real color.

So random question, is Cassandra's hair black, or is it auburn/dark brown?

The latter image was taken when their capture card was having problems, hence Varric also having red hair.

A few character had completely different hair colours in previous games.

Captain Bailey has light blond hair in ME2, and then dark brown hair in ME3. Udina has grey hair in ME1 and ME2 and then black hair in ME3. And imported Shepards very rarely had anything close to their original colour.

They seem to have a similar issue with Cassandra and Varric, who had black and blond hair in DAII, but now appear to both have brown hair.

Ah, ok. I remember that now.

 

But as for Varric and Cassandra, remember those pictures were taken with a faulty capture card. How they look in the trailers is their real color, which is the same as DA2.
