Right, and I see you may have taken my comments personally, which wasn't my intention. My apologies. Certainly a lot of great literature was written by people who didn't necessarily share the life experiences of their characters.

Just from my perspective as a fanfic consumer, it is often easy to tell who has experienced "X" and who hasn't when authors try to write about them. But I'm not saying there aren't exceptions.

And AO3 is a site for hosting fanfic that, in my opinion, is better than ff.net.

I had to come in here and share some love with the Penta-ghasts.  I was totally "meh" about her character prior to release, and she annoyed me heartily in the very beginning of the game because I found her prickly and uncompromising.  But she totally became one of my absolute favorite characters.  She has so much depth and such an interesting view on the world.  I couldn't wait to make her the Divine because I thought she was exactly what Thedas needed.

I believe that depends on how old the fic is. If it was made before a certain year. Then ff.net i has to keep it up. IDK thats whatI have heard.

I wasn't under the impression anybody actually took offense in what you said... especially the Cass thread is rather relaxed, I think. It's not like in some other threads, where somebody surely feels offended and possibly calls in a mod.

Neither Garrus nor Tali were already hooked with someone else though. I know most people now wish Bianca had never existed, but she does. But fine, Tethraghast isn't a crackship. What is it called, then? Or can I call it a sinkship? A ship with so many water leaks it'll never reach the other side.

Eh, the presence or absence of Bianca means nothing if Bioware wanted to do something about it (which, they probably don't, I admit.). Hand-waving Bianca away is a lot less complicated than magically reattaching Leliana's head, which TPTB did without blinking.

Having stumbled on this stuff in other ships, there's a few reasons I can pinpoint:

1) People enjoy joining the bad guys and the good guys together. Nothing is more awesome than a villain redeemed through the power of love (in their eyes).
2) The author wants a challenge. How can they put two such disparate people together and still have it be semi-believable?
3) I cringe just saying this, but it's true: rape fantasies
