They wrap their prickly flesh branches around younger people with the idea that they can leech out these subatomic particles, called mylons, which are housed in the chromosomes of young people and decay as they age. Old people think that by touching young people, they can transfer the mylons to their own chromosomes, which would theoretically rejuvenate their old and frail bodies with youthful vigor and strength, and possibly even immortality. This would allow the old people to usurp the young people as the dominant species on Earth and await the arrival of their ruler, the evil cosmic entity known only as the Dark Lord Xerus, who is said to feast on the universe when the universe dies due to the mylons no longer inhabiting it.

 

It's actually well documented in history and science books, I'm always surprised when I explain this to people and they look at me like I'm insane.
