Are you suggesting that they didn't know Cassandra, Varric, and Cullen would be wildly popular?

If so, I disagree. It's one thing to say that about new character, but these were all characters with established fan bases.

I can imagine the developers not expecting Cassandra to be popular among gay women. We're maybe 2% of their fanbase, and I suspect that if you asked someone to imagine a character gay women would be attracted to, they wouldn't know where to start.

It does strike me as weird that the two characters with an established fanbase are straight...maybe all three if some Varric speculation is true. ('weird' in the same way its weird/an odd coincidence that the big shot of everyone at the Inquisition table has all the LGB LI's lumped  together though, not in a conspiracy way!).

Definitely a bummer that Cass wasn't the bisexual li. Hopefully the disappointment here leads to a strong, warrior woman female li in the future/next game at least :(

In this case, a better balance could have been struck.

We don't know who all of the LIs are yet  ;)

Not important, given the whole plot-importance issue. I can't possibly see the Inquisition's founder being less important than anyone else. And that's ignoring the crushing of a sizable fanbase too.

Divine Justinia V is a LI?

Cassandra as prime instrument of founding, if you prefer.

Cassandra seems pretty plot-important at the start of the game (and probably mandatory).  I don't know if that will continue the whole game or if there is a point where she leaves.

Looking at the other female companions, it seems like they could be missed altogether though I'm not sure.

I find most of Isabela's femininity comes from her appearance and less so from her personality.  Looks aside, how do you think Cassandra and Isabela differ?

Hmm, good question.

Well their looks obviously but you already addressed that. Isabella is fundamentally selfish in a lot of ways, at least until the very end of the game depending upon Hawkes choices. Cass doesn't come off that way. I'd imagine Isabella is the kind of person who would trip and old lady with an arm full of oranges in a market place to slow down someone chasing her (random mental image but there you go.)

Cassandra seems to have a moral compass or honor code that Isabella lacks, Cassandra seems willing to put others before herself. I'm sure there are more differences and similarities even but that's all the brain power I can muster at the moment.

I'm reasonably confident we have some that work here.  But I mean, I didn't realize David was gay until very recently myself, so I suspect they fit the "look like a human being" to me so....

If you wanna know for sure, just prop up one end of a big card board box with a stick and tie some string to it. Put a KD Lang CD and some Xena DVD's under the box and see who stops to pick them up, then you pull the string and trap them in the box and demand they tell you what kind of women they like :)

Hey, some of us were young enough to never get Xena initially and not sufficiently into frustrating subtext to seek it out as a retro thing...

Fine, then for more modern ladies put Teagan and Sara and The L word. Kind of hard to miss the subtext (lol) in that show. Bonus points for Orange is the new black.

Your post made me realize that it's a chill and lonely place for lesbians who don't like romantic drama. Which I don't. I hate it. I want romances to go relatively smoothly and for deadly conflict to happen in other places.

Xena was what clued me into the fact that I was bi.  I didn't quite get it at the time and ran from it for a loooong time, but yeah.  I <3 that show.

If you want conflict free lesbian romances where no one dies, then please let me know if you find anything because I don't think it exists, hahaha.

I find most of Isabela's femininity comes from her appearance and less so from her personality.  Looks aside, how do you think Cassandra and Isabela differ?

Presentation has something to do with it obviously. Looks have a nice way of defining yourself sometimes or a way of restricting someone.I mean if the only way to be feminine is bethany, than I agree, but not necessarily. isabela is a confident Femme. While confidence is considered a masculine trait. I find it hard to imagine feminine personalities, and often is more of a product of culture inforced norms.

Gender presentation is what it is called for a reason. Many hard Butch women are soft and sweet as can be, even mothering. And some twinks have been raging testostrone and vice versa. It is a bit of a misconception that your gender identity necessarily has to pair up with stereotypical "gender personalities" I mean it comes down to the idea that women and men are vastly different in terms of psyche as it necessitates different personalities, and then trying to define what they are which becomes stereotypes.

Women are caring and communicative. Men are confident and logical and all that. I also think that men being "dominant personalities" and women being "submissive personalities" has much more to do with sexism in society than how women and men naturally are.

Cassandra does seem the type to risk her own neck for others and not expect anything in return.

If my master plan works out, I want to break fantasy novels with lesbian protagonists into the mainstream.

It's totally worth it! I was too young but recently decided to check it out and seriously in some episodes it's pretty much maintext I don't really see how anyone can deny it. Go watch!

Cassandra never came off as butch to me (appearance wise) but then again, she reminds me exactly of Morena Baccarin.

I mean, their point might still overall be the case. We could see Cassandras romance once the game comes out and realize literally nothing would have been lost had they made her bi and I'll just be all sad face all over again, lol.

I disagree and could the same be said for Sera?

That happens with pretty much every romance sadly. I expect a new wave of disappointment and/or rants about the heterosexual and homosexual romances come a week after release.

For DA2, for DAO it was more unique. Like Morrigan romance vs Morrigan frienship

I can't get sad about this kind of thing without being simultaneously angry, somehow. Much of my rage was spent earlier, but I despise romances being sunken, especially lesbian ones.
