If only we could get some 'newer' shots of Cassandra like the ones Varric had recently.

I plan to have her in my party but am unsure as to whether I want to make her sword and board or a two-hander.

I try to stick to lore and what I believe the companion would do if left to their own druthers. Hopefully, her skill tree gives me some insight.

 

Cassandra is a two-hander user, master sword&board fighter and dual wielder just by Dawn of the Seeker alone. :/

 

She preferred dual wielding in her younger days too, well the sword&cleaver version. Not daggers. We unfortunately can't make her use that in DAI.

I never really need tanks, so maybe I'll make her a two-hander. She can do more damage that way.

She seems to be mostly shown with sword and shield.  And Blackwall and Ironbull both seem to be two handers

Actually from what I gathered they aren't going to make the tanking talent tree as part of the sword and shield talent tree and it'll be it's own separate talent tree.

 

They did the same to an extent in DA2 where there were 2 tanking talent trees that did not overlap, Sword and Shield was one of them.  They did it that way so you can actually tank with a 2 hander but sword and shield would still be best at that while 2 hander would be best at AOE damage.

I think Sword and Shield actually did more DPS than Two Handed in DA2, though it had less AoE

That would be nice.  I hope they update all the character's screenshots with newer ones.  Well at least the characters that have been released for awhile now.

I always liked having a tank, helped my Mages out a great deal. So it's good that I can have Cassandra fulfill that role or bash heads in with a two-hander.

Yeah, a tank isn't really needed in a lot of fights but it does allow you to control the battlefield a bit more easily to allow for dps cause mayhem on the enemy more easily.  Then there are some boss fights where a tank is a godsend since they can keep the bosses attention and soak up some damage that your dps wouldn't want to take.

 

And yes, I do agree.  Aveline did make for a superior tank.  I usually had my warrior Hawke focused more on dps but he did have some tanking talents to allow for some off tanking.  Isabela wasn't necessarily a good tank in my opinion but she did serve fine as one for groups that wanted to focus more on dps than a more standard setup.  At least she wasn't good enough compared to Fenris, Aveline, or Warrior Hawke in my opinion.

I love that quote and Cassandra use it in a much more badass context in Dawn of the Seeker than Leliana did in the Secret Ashes CGI trailer:
