Not that much time passed between the interrogation scenes of DA2 and when DAI start...

 

How much time in between is it? A year, two more?

The time it takes from Cassandra, Leliana, and Varric to travel from Kirkwall to Haven. I read it, don't remember where.

 

That's all. I thought it would be a few years in between, huh. I know the timeline from DAO to DAI is 10 years, wasn't sure of the timeline here though.

I think her scars are just there do to the fact that they can put them their now.  Better character animations and all.  I mean if you want to really get into it it looks like she has aged 10 years since DA2.  But that again is just do to how limited the DA2 character animations were.

Would be cool if she said how she acquired these scars in game, looking at her back in DA2 she was quite fresh-faced compared to now, time has passed indeed.

I'd put money on her gaining the Scar in the opening act of the game. Looks pretty fresh come the 'you're the only threat I see' line.

Easy way to categorize someone as a 'badass' from a visual standpoint. And judging from comments, I would say it does just that.

I was talking from a design perspective by the animator, not in-universe.

Yeah I suppose she could have acquired them from the blast at the beginning of the game.  Anyway I like em on her.

Well considering they had to go through the rest of the Free Marches, Nevarra and Orlais and pass the Frostbacks, I'd say at least 3-6 months.
