Talking to Alistair in Origins, I got the impression Templars didn't actually need Lyrium, they were addicted to it as a sort of control.

Armor can resemble a female shape without being impractical. After all we have plenty of chesplates that mimic male muscles when a simple flat surface would do. For example, the Onyx armor in Mass Effect 1 looks practical. A picture.
I fear that by going away from ridiculous bikini armor (which everybody should), we might just decide to wear shapeless sacks or simply armor that was designed after males, equating male with practical. Apologies if this is not the intent - I think that the rejections of boobplate can sound like such sweeping statements.

I think you have a point there. A lot of the time, it is about making the armour look good. "Bikini armour" however, I would only ever consider Light Armour, it can look sexy and that's okay. Just look at Greek armour; all about that six-pack. Make it from leather and line with mail or something... I don't see a character like Cass wearing something like that though. Just not her style.
"Bikini armour" becomes an issue when it's heavy armour. Having a thick metal suit designed to protect you and deflect blows, but having what is essentially a "stab trap" right in the middle of your chest is just not good armour design, and thus it looks stupid. Every angle and slope on a knight suit should deflect impacts away from the wearer, not into them.
This is perfect for Cassandra, imo. I love the design.

Yep and then they become addicted.
Although it won't kill them to stop taking Lyrium, the need for Lyrium will be with them forever.

Oh, okay. Nevermind the control theory then.
Yup that's been outdated since before DA 2.
But unless if you actually look around for evidence, a lot of folks still think the Chantry just gets them hooked on it for kicks.
And it turns out?
Alistair was a bitter lying lyrium fiend who was getting high behind your back the entire game ![]()

Alistair never join the Templar, he was just a trainy. And as he explained if you ask him if he can teach you to be a Templar, you don't need lyrium in order to use Templar abilities, Lyrium just enhances the effects of their abilities. The chantry is fullly aware of the side effects so, as Alistair says, its a subtle form of control.

Though I wonder if that will always be the case. Will those that have a strong connection to magic/the fade be able to use templar abilities without lyrium? I'm talking about those on the verge of being mages but are not quite there. It would explain how Alistair and the Warden can become templars without lyrium.
Well for Alistair, it could just be his bloodline with his mother being a mage and his ancestry with Calenhad.

Basically after DAO release.
Gaider said that Templar abilities require Lyrium.
Basically google this: Templar abilities require lyrium
It should bring up the interview he said as much in.

Seems more like Gaider goofed. It happens. Alastair said he left the order before he had to use any Lyrium while in the interview Gaider mentions Alastair as proof you can retain Templar powers long after having stopped using Lyrium. Sounds like he made a mistake, especially considering Templar is going to be a specialization in DA: I and we probably aren't going to need lyrium to use those Templar powers.
I wouldn't worry about what was said in a random interview being a retcon. Until I see it in game its not a retcon.

Yeah. And Gaider wrote the comic. Originally, DAO would have required lyrium, but they weren't sure how to implement it from a gameplay pov, so they probably just added in Alistair's line afterwards. Now that they plan on having specializations affect the story more, they probably decided to reimplement it.

So does that mean I have to snort lines of lyrium off Cassandra's back? Because I'm okay with that.

Dude. Don't make me change my canon Inquisitor. I was going to roll a Mage, but this sounds too good to pass up.
