Well, I don't mean it like that...
I just think that it might be better to look at the whole picture, not just focus on the "drug" and "addiction" aspects... Templars have a sacred duty, and they submit themselves to the negative effects of lyrium in order to make the world a better place. The vast, vast, vast majority of them didn't sign up because they heard lyrium gives people a decent buzz...
I agree that sweeping things under the rug is a bad habit, but it's been done many times in the past. On the bright side, the writers seem to have some interest in moving away from that, based on decisions like the removal of blood mage as a player spec and some unspecified impact that our class will have on the game. Also the specs are limited to 1 each so that we will have some level of recognition of the spec by NPCs... so perhaps they won't sweep lyrium addiction under the rug. Whether they do or don't, it's more complicated than "getting high." At least, that's how I see it...
True, but I meant more like... questionable deeds for the greater good. Not specifically related to blood magic. She'd be a poor Seeker to ever think that was acceptable...
It came across like that.
I know that what they do makes the world a safer place for people, but that doesn't mean I have to accept or approve the methods in which it happens.
If they sweep it under the rug, it is bad. If they show it, it is bad. I'm in a lose-lose situation with this. That's one reason why it's so frustrating.
I think Cassandra would be reluctantly practical. For example in the Crestwood demo, while she accepted sacrificing the village to save the keep you can tell she didn't like how they had to do that. Not to the point of voicing her misgivings like Varric, but they were still there.
I think you are massively overreacting on this, but then I clearly haven't seen what you have. I'm not sure if that should carry over to several substantially different situations in a fantasy world, though. It's unfortunate that the ground you're choosing to stand on risks ruining your enjoyment of something you love, but you stick with it.
Thanks.
Zero, huh? Coincidentally, that's the same amount of lyrium dust taken by either Alistair, or my Templar spec'd Warden, or my Templar spec'd Hawke. Or Templar Carver. Zero. Five bucks says it's the same amount consumed on screen by either Cassandra or Blackwall or Cullen. Just saying.
Well, sure, that's ONE way to take it. >_>;
Another way is to realize that Word of God doesn't mean much and the work stands as is. Death of the Author and all that. OR to not immediately judge people just because they are addicted to a drug. Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are all drugs that many of the people you know are probably addicted to, yet they remain the same lovable and good people they always have been despite that. Thedas is a messy world and applying a one-size fits all modern morality is likely to be disappointing in the long run.
I think of lyrium dust as less of a drug addict and more like anti-radiation pills some people who handle radioactive material or who fear radioactive fallout take. Those too can have some nasty side effects, but they seem better than the alternative.
Again, making it worse.
Did I ever say I don't like the people as much? No I did not. But they have a flaw I do not like and that severely lessens my enjoyment of them.
