Would a life as a dragon hunter have been meaningfully safer or more comfortable than her life as the Right Hand?

I think Cassandra's life took an unhappy turn right from the start given her upbringing and what happened to her parents. I think loneliness would have dogged her whatever her vocation might have turned out to be. She strikes me as someone who wouldn't really know what a safe or comfortable life would be even if she has that as an option. It's just never been like that for her.

Be a good wife, with a bunch of brats, never putting an armor on in a castle/manor filled with horses...and their dung.

I'm pretty sure she's not interested...

This is Dark Fantasy though. Not fantasy. In many settings, I would envy the life of a hero or adventurer. But not in Dragon Age. Gaider seems to want to subvert that. Like an itch that must be scratched... where a hero's life is shite and based on sacrifice and loneliness. It's very ummm..... "Catholic". lol. And I don't mean because of Chantry stuff. I mean it's very guilt based, with lots of denial of self and flogging and wandering into the sunset (presumably for more self-flogging).

He's incapable of making heroism "fun".

Well this thread has gone down the rabbit hole. Can we go back to discussing how delightful Cassandra is, please?

The weird thing is, they've had this conversation before. In this thread.

Cass objects. There is nothing delightful about her!

Quite literally ^_^. Her tarot card, if she ascends to the sunburst throne, shows her wielding a sword while wearing the divine crown.

Don't worry, its normal. It is quite well known that post-game content is severely lacking. Interactions with companions is about zilch, and I believe companion banters simply stop altogether.

Just to add, what I find funny is Gaider said his favorite character is Isabela. That surprised me. Because she's the most unlike anything he writes. She knows how to enjoy herself -- win the loot - and come out unscathed in the end to boot. She never pays the hefty price of a hero.

I beg to differ.

Uhhh, what? That's the first I have ever heard that.

You sure he didn't mean out of the ones he's written?

Because on his blog, it's Isabela (Sheryl Chee's character).

edit: Actually he just says one of the few favorites. My bad.

Huh. That's pretty crappy, didn't know banter stopped. But to have her greeting change, too... huh.

To be fair, Cassandra and many other characters wouldn't be nearly as interesting if they lead happy lives.

And Isabela is still my favorite character. Who doesn't want to fall in love with a wild pirate queen!

Sure they would.

I think you can have both happiness and.. a sense of purpose or mission. Millions of people do it all the time. It's my main beef with this setting, as much as I like it. There's a sort of understated rule here that you can't have both.

It's hard to explain, but that just reminds me of Catholicism through and through. The idea that goodness must accompany misery. That enjoyment has a cost.

Virtue usually does involve misery, always putting the needs of others ahead of your own tends to do that.

So we're aiming for altruistic virtue then? Not mere heroism, but sainthood? Sure that would be miserable no matter what.

In the end, I don't find it all that compelling either way. I see it as just a way to be "different". Hopefully it's just a phase. Someone got tired of good guys beating bad guy's asses -- and going home with the girl. So they tried to be clever and make it more costly. "No, no! Not good enough. We want you be like Jesus or Saint Francis. Not Conan and Red Sonja."

That happens with everyone. They cease talking to you (other than the stock "Hello"), and their companion quests are no longer able to be completed.

No more cuddling with Cass post-game :(

I am tremendously disappointed that Isabela isn't in DAI. She is easily my favorite part of DA2.

I love Isabela too. Maybe the same with Varric. Both characters allow me to relax and just be a goofy adventurer. Along with Act 1 of DA2.

Until the end at least. Now Hawke is potentially a Jesus now too. Yay.

She only brings it out for special occasions.

Inquisitor: "Bow chicka wow wow" B)

Cassandra: " I don't know what that means, but I want to find out..."

I haven't seen that so far. Or at least nothing to suggest that such a thing is permanent.

Seconded, she was by far my favorite companion in DA2. I love live and let live types.
