In regards to any questions over who the best "mundane" warrior we've had is, I'd vote for Cassandra before Aveline. Varric claims Aveline's physically stronger than Blackwall, sure - bullshit, but sure - but not more skilled, but both Blackwall and Bull have banter with Cassandra that suggests she gets the better of them in sparring more often than not, so Aveline being stronger than Blackwall doesn't necessarily make her better than Cassandra. 

 

Anyway, unrelated.

Alright, so when Cassandra learns that Varric knew where Hawke was and was able to contact them all along, she is absolutely livid to the point that she tries to beat the living hell out of him. This is more due to her being angry at herself for believing his lies than anything, but still. Later, however, if Leliana was the Warden's LI, we learn that she knew where the Hero of Ferelden was the whole time. Even if she ''wasn't'' romancing them, she manages to track them down. So why is there no acknowledgement about this duplicity on Cassandra's part? I mean, wouldn't she expect Leliana, who she has known for years, and who she wasn't interrogating in a hostile manner, not to lie to her and keep a potential Inquisitor away?

The Hero of Ferelden was the first consideration for Inquisitor, before Hawke was brought up as an option. Cassandra says so herself. Now, hindsight being what it is, the Warden would have been the worst possible choice given Corypheus' powers over the blight, but even knowing that, I'm surprised Cassandra isn't/wasn't offended by the betrayal of trust between herself and Leliana in hiding their location.

That really doesn't change what I just said at all. S/he may have been the first choice, but Hawke, his/her track record aside was definitely the better choice regardless to lead the Inquisition.
