I feel sorry for the ones who strive to protect themselves from demons every time they go to sleep. Being allowed to live is not condolence for being tortured every time you close your eyes.

I can sympathize with it. I'll get a little personal here, but I have a history with..mental illness. As well as drug abuse. Hallucinating is no fun. I've done some crazy stuff. I'm in control now, but I can put myself in this situation.. a little. It's similar.

There's probably no easy way to have games reflect the experience though.

The Chantry also needs to stop putting all these people with traumatic past experiences with magic in charge of policing magic.  That's a terrible idea.

I'll agree there. Thedas probably doesn't know jack about science, but a little psychological screening wouldn't be too much a stretch for this setting.

To be fair though, it's not always a bad thing. Cassandra had traumatic experiences, and signed on for just that reason.. but she turned out OK. I don't think it was because they made her a Seeker instead.. because she was still pissed off in DotS at first. She made a choice on her own, to not be like the Meredith type.

I never said nor implied that it wasn't a big part of Donne. I never even said anything about Donne until you brought him up after my initial post. I also didn't say I know Donne's work, I said I know OF his work, in that I've discussed him in English classes and dabbled over some of his work. By no means whatsoever does mean I have a deep and intimate knowledge of his poetry, themes, and subtext. And you say that my phrases aren't idiomatic, when you insist on misinterpreting every single thing I say and completely twisting the point of my posts into something else entirely. Seriously, are you doing this sh*t on purpose or are you legitimately unable to take messages at anything but their literal extremes?

What are you talking about? All I said was that the poem Cassandra read, reminded me of the metaphysical poets like John Donne. You were the one who tried to tell me otherwise, and then went on and on with Streetmagic how metaphysical poetry and the erotic were separate (it is not true). I said that your oxymoron was not idiomatic, which was an entirely different topic. Anyone who even “dabbles”, with Donne, or any poet should understand what they wrote about. If you are so ignorent of that aspect of literature, why would you even try to debate it without first learning about it? The erotic was a recuring theme in metaphysical poetry, if you don’t like it then suffer with it, it is literary history. Furthermore, your last two sentences don't make any sense.

OMFG, THIS KILLED ME!

They seriously need to release a hardback version of Hard in Hightown. I would preorder that sh*t. Also Swords and Shields (bonus points if they have S&S printed with annotations in the margins written in-character).

That depends on how correct Solas is about the nature of the Fade. I'd like to think that a millenia year old Elvhen god-king in hiding is correct about a thing or two in regards to the nature of the world.

If circle trained mages were taught to maybe respect the Fade as opposed to fearing it all together perhaps possession would not be as big an issue. There's always going to be that guy or girl that drops the ball, but from what we know of Tevinter or even Rivain it isn't raining Abominations in those places. They're more like freak accidents than an everyday reality.

I can relate to this thread.

Cassandra Pentaghast is the most visible character in the game.

I remember her from the cutscenes in Dragon Age 2, but didn't really think about it. She looked a bit like a fashion model with a foreign accent. I just pushed her awy from my mind.

But to experience her in Dragon Age: Inquisition gets you going. A tough and determined woman who eats dragons for breakfast - with bones.

I kind of started liking her lisping way of speaking and her hard looks.

I think he's knowledgeable about a previous world (and the Fade). Just not this one. He barely likes this one.

Something happened to the entire world order.. I know not what.. Yavana hints at it in the comics. And I think it's this world Solas prefers. The world with no veil.

And he can screw off for all I care. It must've changed for a good reason. Because it's closer to our real world now. And I like our real world.

What Solas wants is the equivalent of ME3 Synthesis. Except with spirits and demons.

You're making a lot of assumptions without anything to back it up. For all we know the Veil was Solas' doing and seeing all the conflict and war that sprung from his actions is what is motivating him now. These are also assumptions, but at least I'm using Fen'Harel's mythos to back it up.

Of course, I'm making assumptions. ;) I don't think that needs to be stated. That's just the case when we get into these mysterious aspects of the mythology.

What I'm not assuming is how he defines spirits and co-mingling with them. I also see a little of the same message creeping in with Cole. Where is bioware taking me? I can't help but think of what they did with AI in Mass Effect. They've got this whole universalist schtick about how everyone needs to get along and hug.. and I don't put it past them to extend it to absurd levels.

There's nothing wrong at all with the idea of wanting to coexist with spirits. I find it a refreshing change.

Saw someone post about this & I don't know if it's meant to be an innuendo or not.

So... Cassandra's Romance Card, any of you guys notice the... suggestive nature of the cup in her right hand?

Where she is holding it... how it is dripping/ soaking wet...

Although it could just be my perverted mind, I'll show myself out...

*disgusted noise*

True co-existence means the fabric of reality changes.. that there is no difference between fade and material world.

I hate this level of fantasy. Hate. I like Alice in her garden. And sometimes in Wonderland. Not both at the same time. That sh*t is for freaks.

I'm going to watch Cosmos.

Reality is broken, asunder. I would see it repaired. And why don't you like that level of fantasy?

It troubles me.

I said earlier that I had a history with drugs and mental illness... not sure if you caught that. Needless to say, I think the main thing that keeps me in line is trying to take an empirical and materialistic view of things. It grounds me. Else I could do something weird.. you don't wanna know. haha. I like indulging my imagination a bit, but even in a fantasy setting, I appreciate the tactile approach of weapons, or wandering mountaintops, or having a casual conversation. I don't need too much magical wonkiness and odd ideas. A little goes a long way.

I'm not sure if it was that different, there was always a separation between the Fade (dream world) and reality, otherwise a few things don't make much sense: the Crossroad, the Foci+Anchor, etc. The difference is probably how thick the Veil was and probably how people interacted with spirits (didn't saw them as tool, but person).

Thedas is full of people believing that "the grass was greener back in those days" too and that doesn't help. Storytellers deform everything to make them look cooler than they are..,

Anyway, I love bringing Cassandra to the Arbor Wild, she's really annoyed by "all that nonsense" (I got a lots of disapproval there, but she still loves me). Cassandra is probably the only character who is going to digest everything we learn in DAI. Not sure exactly what will result of it though.

Also, am I the only person who came to the conclusion that we need at least 3 "Creators" running around? Fen'Harel, Mythal and who murdered Mythal (I didn't find anything about June in the Mythal Temple, but I could have missed it).

Spoiler

Considering all the info peppered throughout the games about how spirits have no imagination and the Fade forms around the minds of dreamers, it all does sort of fit.  Oddly enough, this does in a way trend toward your preference for less fantasitcal stuff insomuch as it dminishes, if not removes, external influence from bad human and elf behavior.  "A demon made me do it" will hold much less weight with that understanding.
